    Off-Topic This Date in History

When I was a kid, my Dad and I were at my grandfather's home (his father) watching the Harlem Globetrotters play on TV. I asked how the Globetrotters would fare against an NBA team. My father assured me it would not be a competitive game. I replied that the Globetrotters could do the same...

Politics Trump wears blue suit to black coat event.

Well, I for one, am just glad that Vlad "the Ras" Putin did not direct St. Donald of Mar-a-Lago to wear a 1970's era pastel leisure suit to the funeral. If Vlad the Ras had been feeling particularly vindictive, then he could have told St. Donald to wear a Bozo the Clown costume to the funeral...

Off-Topic St. Andrews University in Laurinburg

My wife and my sister both attended and graduated from St. Andrews. I met my wife because she and my sister became best friends after they had a lot classes together. It's a shame that the educational universe no longer has room for places like St. Andrews.

    Off-Topic Chapel Hill/Carrboro History

Anytime my older sister was in the car and it was the morning, she had to listen to WKIX, Pat Patterson in the Morning. He was her FAVORITE DJ. After I got out of the Army and was in college, I remember "Daniel" on WQDR. If you need a memory prompt, just imagine saying "Daniel" in your head...

Politics NC Political History: East v West, The State of the State?

Who is running things these days? The cultural descendants of the folks who instigated the Wilmington coup d'etat of 1898 and the simultaneous massacre of black citizens. But in keeping with cultural diversity, today's attacks include both black and Hispanic citizens. And today's attacks are...

    Off-Topic A Poetry Thread

One of my grandfather's favorite poems/epigrams, by Edwin Markham, the Bard of Labor Preparedness For all your days prepare, And meet them ever alike: When you are the anvil, bear— When you are the hammer, strike.

Off-Topic Have you ever known a murderer?

I don't think I have ever "known" any murderers. But, . . ., when I was in the Army in Germany, I attended a Sunday worship group (U/U) that contained a group of civilian teachers who worked at the schools (mostly H. H. Arnold High School in Wiesbaden) for the dependent children of GI's. On...

Charlotte. If you are married, I will need a notarized statement from your wife stating that she has been married to you long enough that she has accepted that this sort of thing is just who you are.

    Off-Topic Wednesday afternoon business Holiday?

About 50 years ago, my brother-in-law worked at the UNC Press and had the option of working either 5 eight hour days (M-F) or 4 ten hour days (M-Th). He picked the 4-ten schedule. He said getting up on Thursday morning, knowing he had a 10 hour day a head of him, after three previous 10 hour...

    Off-Topic Religion in the USA

I generally agree with this. To me, doing things in the name of God and doing things for God are usually quite different. As in, "here's my excuse for doing what I did" verses "here's why I felt I had to help."

    Off-Topic Wednesday afternoon business Holiday?

Where I grew up, pretty much everything but the gas stations closed down Wednesday afternoon, including my father's store. But, pretty much everything was open on Saturday mornings. In my father's case, the four hours from Wednesdays were shifted to Saturday mornings. This shift preserved the...

Off-Topic What should I do with my DVD's?

    1. Throw them away. 2. Give them to Goodwill. 3. Give/Trade for Credit to a used book store. 4. Keep them as they will be immensely valuable once St. Donald of Mar-a-Lago drives the US back into the New Stone Age. 5. Box them up and mail them to someone even dumber than I am. Any ideas? I...
