Agree, but seems like that would be a good opportunity to let North Carolina know Trump pulled pretty much all emergency federal funding from the state in the middle of the cleanup.
Dems should have billboards all over western nc with an image of Trump saying “I did that.” And a caption that reads “fema denied funding for Helene cleanup.”

Has Whatley ever run in a race before? Much less won an election? If he beats Roy, then we really will know the jig is up. Even here in NC - despite a Dem Guv, Sec State, State Super plus DA and State SCJustice

There is actually very little evidence that Cal's affair cost him any votes. Tillis and Trump won by approximately the same margin. Even if Cal did lose some votes, it almost certainly wouldn't have been enough.

Look at 2024 in MI and WI. Baldwin and Slotkin barely squeaked out seats by running ahead of Kamala. But only by about 1.5 points and that was with the black woman as the candidate. I guarantee you that race/gender in those states cost Kamala at least a point.

Tillis was also the incumbent.

The reason that people thought Cal cost himself was that he was leading in polls. Well, Trump was way behind in the polls too and it became a lot closer than we thought. Trump should have lost NC, according to the polls. The polls were wrong.
I agree with this. I don’t think it was the “dealbreaker” for voters it’s often made out to be. It was mainly just another BS reason that those who weren’t going to vote for him anyway would cite as a reason for why they wouldn’t vote for him (while they also voted for Trump). That said, I’m sure it did cost him some votes here and there, and it was incredibly stupid of him. At a minimum, he should have very well known that it was exactly the type of thing that could jeopardize his chances of winning.

I think a lot of people told themselves they could vote for a black woman for President over someone as deplorable as Trump and then couldn't bring themselves to do it once they got there to vote.

Or even more direct. Something like, "Democrats tried to pay for all Helene cleanup. Republicans took the money away and gave it to billionaires."
Good email from Jeff Jackson today --

Yesterday, I stood outside a heavily damaged sewage pump station in Hillsborough and gave a press conference.

It was about 91 degrees. Reporters were sweating.

I’m suing FEMA.

Why?

Because they illegally cancelled more than $200 million that was headed to North Carolina for water and sewer upgrades.

It was basically a flood preparation fund. Congress created it, funded it, and told FEMA to run it.

Before FEMA pulled the plug, they had approved over 60 projects across our state - mostly moving pump stations and sewer lines to higher ground.

A few examples:
  • $22.5m for Salisbury to move a pump station. The city already spent $3m of its own funds getting started.
  • $5.9m for Gastonia to move sewer lines out of the floodplain.
  • $4m for Mt. Pleasant to improve drainage in the town center, which regularly floods and damages businesses.
And then there’s the Hillsborough pump station, where I spoke yesterday. It was set to receive $6m to move to higher ground. Also cancelled by FEMA.

But here’s the thing:

Three weeks ago, a tropical storm hit. The nearby river rose 24 feet and submerged the entire station. Millions of gallons of untreated sewage poured into the river.

I spotlighted this pump station because it’s a perfect example of why this funding matters - and what happens when it’s taken away.

Most people agree that keeping drinking water flowing and sewage contained is a legitimate use of public dollars. I appreciate that Sen. Tillis and Rep. Edwards have also urged FEMA to reverse course.

Heck, President Trump signed this program into law in his first term. He wanted it.

So we’re going to court, along with a number of AGs, and I’ll report back.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Wiley Nickel to suspend campaign, endorse Roy Cooper, run for Wake DA Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Wiley Nickel to suspend campaign, endorse Roy Cooper, run for Wake DA
The job he always wanted.........
I have to admit I have always been a fan of the Freeman Clan. But dang she just can't charge a cop-like no matter what-so I am glad she is stepping down..Hopefully she will double/triple her salary in some private Law/lobbying sector

The Federal Emergency Management Agency denied North Carolina's request for the agency to match 100% of the state funds for Helene cleanup, according to a letter sent from the acting FEMA administrator to the governor of North Carolina.

"After a careful and thorough review of all the information available, including that contained in your initial request for a cost share adjustment and appeal, we have concluded that an extension of the 100 percent federal cost share for debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance for an additional 180 days under major disaster declaration FEMA-4827-DR is not warranted," acting Administrator David Richardson wrote in the letter.

The cost-sharing request comes from a Biden administration directive to match 100% of the funds that the state puts in to share costs of the disaster cleanup after Hurricane Helene devastated the state as a Category 4 storm in September 2024.

WNC has to know what happened here.

I’d like to beat Cal with a 3 foot section of garden hose… with the nozzle end. What a fucking dumbass. Can’t believe I wasted my primary vote on him.
Pretty sure I am not alone here in knowing Cal personally, though not at a level I would call "friend" since college.

That stated, he was a good dude in college. Dennis Miller (pre-right wing version) had a great line about 'not ever wanting to vote for someone who never smoke weed' (or at least never vote for anyone who came of age in 60s or after that would lie about it)... Let's just say Cal enjoyed enough of that with me that we had plenty of conversations to know if he were a total shit or not, and as noted, he was a good guy.

Have only seen Cal 2 or 3 times since college days, but he always greeted me with a smile. I voted for him but was pretty shocked he pulled a John Edwards given the enormity of what was at stake in that race. So can't blame anyone for having true enmity for him, but for me his is just a very sad story for someone who could have done a lot of good (or, at a bare minimum, a lot of better than the elected alternative).

Thanks Oddball. Always nice to hear personal anecdotes of this nature. I guess we'll have to count me amongst those who were like: "What? Dude, that is so Trumpesque with the cheating on the wife thing!" And I say this as some prude who still holds the same against Clinton. (No, not Hillary - though her acquiescence is not lost on me)
