Coach Scheyer Wisdom = 15

Coach Smith said that when a key player is injured that a team tends to rally in the next game and compensate. Cooper Flagg had played 15 minutes when he flattened his ankle last time out. What if Knueppel’s superb performance and (Huntersville, NC) Isaiah Evans solid game off the bench were just that versus Georgia Tech? Vamos a ver. The “tallest in the nation” dook squad lost some inches with the injuries to Flagg and Brown but even with the addition of smallish (for them) 6-6 Mason Gillis into the starting line-up will tower over Carolina in 3 of 5 positions most of the time. Khaman Maluach tends to loom over no matter whom he might be faced off against at 7-2 and he too stepped up when Flagg went down almost doubling his scoring average of 8 ppg and upping his rebounding average of 6.7. His length was troublesome for Carolina the last time out.

Wisconsonite Knueppel, so perfect in looking the part of standard blue devil star, is, in fact, an outstanding all-around player – his ritmos are good. Aussie 3rd-year-man Proctor, who must know his way around campus better than practically any recent player has been trouble often for Carolina. His ritmos are down. Evans has soaring rhythms as does the often forgotten Caleb Foster. Patrick Ngongba picked up the slack when Maliq Brown was out earlier in the year and he’s ready again. The dynamic here is difficult to track. I hear that they’ll just plug in another McDonald’s All-American. We’ll see. Third Time’s The Charm?

Frontcourt: Washington has the rhythms. Lubin is plugged into something other than his cycles (or he’s been fibbing about his birthdate). Ty Claude again stands ready. James Brown “feels good.”

Wings: Newtonian arc for Ian Jackson and energy for Drake Powell. Jay’Len Withers joins Jackson in the Mensa Club. Cade Tyson is middlin.

Guards: A calm and calculating Cadeau is at the helm. R.J. Davis brings a truckload of confidence to the court. And Seth Trimble has got the physical.

Overall: It is a tough turnaround for both teams with dook having suffered personnel losses in their noon battle with Georgia Tech and Carolina having themselves been battered in an erratically officiated donnybrook against the Deacons. Withers and Davis played many minutes in that dirt clod fight of a game and here’s to hoping that they rested well – R.J. Davis is the beating heart of this squad and Withers has stepped up admirably of late. There is good presence of mind among the Heels for this contest. Third game in a whole lot is riding on instinct and discipline developed. Execution has improved of late and defensive effort has become a team thing. Rebounding has improved because of that. These young men are a team now. Individuals are subsumed because they are “Playing Together.” Las Vegas doubts Carolina and has this one dook by 7.5. The Biorhythms do not – Carolina by 4 in this second Big Four contest in a row.

Will definitely be fascinating to see Duke without Flagg and Brown. They still have more than enough firepower, most likely. But I definitely like UNC‘s chances tonight to make it a competitive, hard fought game like it was for most of the game last weekend in Chapel Hill. One thing that does give me pause is that Duke got out to that 13 or 15 point lead or whatever it was in the first half completely without Flagg, who was in foul trouble. And of course this go round UNC won’t have the home court advantage of a raucous partisan Smith Center crowd to lift them.

On the other hand, UNC probably desperately needs this win to make sure that selection Sunday is not extremely stressful in Chapel Hill. Duke, meanwhile, it’s just playing for gravy. Nothing they do this week in Charlotte is how they will be measured this season. It all starts next week. So it will be interesting to see what kind of mentality they have.

My heart says Carolina wins, my head says Duke pulls out a competitive game.

As far as "home court" advantage - don't forget Charlotte has always been a home away from home for Carolina. And there is usually enough anti-d00k sentiment in the stands during the ACCT to possibly give the Heels a bit of a lift from the crowd. The fans in attendance from Clemson and Louisville will be rooting either FOR the Heels or AGAINST the debils.

Not so sure this will be enough to put the Heels over the top tonight, but it can't hurt.

I will add, a good showing tonight - with or without Col. Flagg on the floor - win or lose, will bode well for our chances making the Dance.

Well, we're up to 46 brackets out of 107 on BracketMatrix and barttorvik has us at a 92% chance of making it in. Think we were only in 8 or 10 brackets prior to yesterday...

A lot of talking heads keep saying we need to beat Duke to get in. Goodman, especially. If that's your criteria for making the tournament, there'd be about 4 teams in it. Not all quad 1 records are alike - we've no doubt played the toughest slate of Q1 games of anyone.

I still don't like our chances tonight - Duke's still huge and didn't lose any shooters. Honestly, a dark horse key to the game I think is to not let Evans beat you. He'll see more minutes tonight and probably has a chip on his shoulder about us never offering him. And he can shoot the lights out...

I think if you could say for certain there are no bid stealers, UNC is in win or lose

But a scenario where Boise St and Dayton win their tourneys, and anyone but Memphis in the American, would not be ideal

Then you have Texas too who is still playing, and may or may not be ahead of UNC already. I think UNC gets in ahead of Xavier and Ohio St

my gut instincts are that (a) we have to win this to make the tournament and (b) too many dookies will step up for their two injured teammates and play out of their minds for us to do that. Hope I am wrong.

I do hope that the Blue Devils internalized Scheyer’s “we have bigger fish to fry” type comments about Flagg and somehow that means they just don’t have sustained focus for an entire 40 minutes. But that feels like wishful thinking.

I was disappointed in the lack of a strong home court advantage yesterday against Wake, so worried we might not get that boost tonight either.

A Newtonian Jackson? A smart Jae'Lyn? A calm and calculating Cadeau?

I like all of these. Things sound good for us.

One of my fav movies of all time.

As to the game, I share @nycfan's sentiment worrying about the Duke players stepping up and playing out of their minds. But, I can't imagine knowing your season may be riding on this game isn't a good motivating factor for our players..

In the first half yesterday dook shot the ball horribly, they missed like their first 13 or 14 threes IIRC. That won't happen again. Flagg not playing is helpful but dook is far from a one player team.

My gut tells me we need something extraordinary out of one of our non RJ players. Like Withers vs ND and Lubin vs Wake.

We need RJ to go for at least 20 points, hitting at least three 3-pointers at at least a 40% clip.

We need at least 20 points and 12 boards between Lubin and Withers, with Withers hitting at least one three to remind them he can be an outside thread.

We need Cadeau keep the turnovers down and keep his A:TO at 2:1 or better, and give us at least 8 points with at least one 3-pointer to keep the defense spread out.

We need Drake to play that great defense he can play. He needs to give us at least 6 points and hit at least one 3.

We need Seth to give us at least 8 points with at least one 3-pointer to keep the defense spread out. And hound his an on D.

We need to see some of that Ian Jackson we saw in the middle of the season. At least 10 points with at least two 3-pointed, while shooting at least 40% from 3.

We need Washington come in and play as strong as he can. At least 6 points and 5 rebounds.

I’ve been on and on about how they need to attack the paint and not be in love with 3’s, just because they’ve been falling lately… but tonight they’re absolutely going to need a barrage of 3’s to fall.

I just want them to come from inside out play and transition, and not bs step-backs after swinging it aimlessly around the perimeter.

The effort on D is going to be there, it’s been steady. Just need shots to fall and it’s anyone’s game.

As another poster said, can't let Evans go crazy. Getting Maluach in any sort of foul trouble would be great

Rough game for Drake yesterday. Can't wait to see how he bounces back vs Kneuppel

Cadeau and his stupid fouls. One stupid one and one not quite as stupid one and now he’s got 2 before the under 16 timeout. Kid is never going to learn defensive IQ the way he needs to. Maddening.
