Coach Smith said that when a key player is injured that a team tends to rally in the next game and compensate. Cooper Flagg had played 15 minutes when he flattened his ankle last time out. What if Knueppel’s superb performance and (Huntersville, NC) Isaiah Evans solid game off the bench were just that versus Georgia Tech? Vamos a ver. The “tallest in the nation” dook squad lost some inches with the injuries to Flagg and Brown but even with the addition of smallish (for them) 6-6 Mason Gillis into the starting line-up will tower over Carolina in 3 of 5 positions most of the time. Khaman Maluach tends to loom over no matter whom he might be faced off against at 7-2 and he too stepped up when Flagg went down almost doubling his scoring average of 8 ppg and upping his rebounding average of 6.7. His length was troublesome for Carolina the last time out.
Wisconsonite Knueppel, so perfect in looking the part of standard blue devil star, is, in fact, an outstanding all-around player – his ritmos are good. Aussie 3rd-year-man Proctor, who must know his way around campus better than practically any recent player has been trouble often for Carolina. His ritmos are down. Evans has soaring rhythms as does the often forgotten Caleb Foster. Patrick Ngongba picked up the slack when Maliq Brown was out earlier in the year and he’s ready again. The dynamic here is difficult to track. I hear that they’ll just plug in another McDonald’s All-American. We’ll see. Third Time’s The Charm?
Frontcourt: Washington has the rhythms. Lubin is plugged into something other than his cycles (or he’s been fibbing about his birthdate). Ty Claude again stands ready. James Brown “feels good.”
Wings: Newtonian arc for Ian Jackson and energy for Drake Powell. Jay’Len Withers joins Jackson in the Mensa Club. Cade Tyson is middlin.
Guards: A calm and calculating Cadeau is at the helm. R.J. Davis brings a truckload of confidence to the court. And Seth Trimble has got the physical.
Overall: It is a tough turnaround for both teams with dook having suffered personnel losses in their noon battle with Georgia Tech and Carolina having themselves been battered in an erratically officiated donnybrook against the Deacons. Withers and Davis played many minutes in that dirt clod fight of a game and here’s to hoping that they rested well – R.J. Davis is the beating heart of this squad and Withers has stepped up admirably of late. There is good presence of mind among the Heels for this contest. Third game in a whole lot is riding on instinct and discipline developed. Execution has improved of late and defensive effort has become a team thing. Rebounding has improved because of that. These young men are a team now. Individuals are subsumed because they are “Playing Together.” Las Vegas doubts Carolina and has this one dook by 7.5. The Biorhythms do not – Carolina by 4 in this second Big Four contest in a row.
