All last night, sat on the levee and moaned.

Coincidence or bad statistics. Our weather data from 1025 and before is only so-so.
You should read more on what constitutes a 1000 year event. You don't need data going back more than a thousand years, any more than you need 4 billion years to determine that the half-life of U-238 is that long.

Are we or are we not assessing 1,000 year events on a ~100 year data sample?

How many variables are in play with the half-life of U-238? You can measure that in a lab setting, no? Just a wee bit different from the globe’s weather over several millenia?

I’m pretty sure that scientists can get an excellent understanding of climatology and weather patterns and extreme weather events by researching core samples of soil and vegetation samples and such. At least, there are a whole lot of scientists measuring stuff in labs specifically for that purpose.
