"As the owner / operator of Jordan Lake Tours for the past 18 years I have received many different questions but one question that comes up often is; "are there alligators in the area"? My answer has always been "not likely"...until now." Thank goodness this isn't in #DeepChatham.

Alligator sighted in Chatham County!
As you drive into Saxapahaw on the Sax-Beth Road from Hwy. 54, there’s an “Oxbow” that’s fed by the Haw at flood stage and a creek coming down from the “highland” above Saxapahaw - up where the village’s historic water supply is.

About 5-8 years ago, we were down in that mucky “oxbow” looking for invasive plants to kill.

We came across a small ‘gator - 3-4 feet. Figure it got lost. It was early summer. Hope it made it back to good ‘Gator territory…….that “oxbow” is likely cold as hell in the winter.
