An American Snowflake in Spain...

We are in Alicante Spain today and were having a conversation with a German couple next to us who asked where in the US we are from. I told them North Carolina and referenced halfway between Miami and New York. They elaborated that they had been to both cities but never to NC and then said they spent time on the West Coast visiting all the national parks. I remarked that the country is so diverse because it is geographically huge and they agreed. Then the fireworks happened.

The gentleman from Germany laughed and said "but all covered by Trump!" I laughed and replied "please don't hold that against us! We didn't do it!" Next thing I know an American woman feom the table behind erupted into "OH I am so sick of that!" And slammed her fists on the table. It was enough to cause the Germans to wish us a nice trip and leave mid conversation.

I got up, walked over, squatted down and quietly said "my remark was not meant to offend anyone. I'm sorry if you were offended. I hope you have a nice cruise." Her response was not to be gracious but to stare me into the eyes and say "im so tired of people apologizing for being American".

At that point, I felt i needed to correct the record and explained that I was not, indeed, apologizing for being an American but apologizing for our President whom I find to be truly embarrassing. I even said "and you may not. That's your prerogative. What is not your prerogative is being rude and crass to strangers in public" "Well I could hear your conversation!" was her response. Her husband joined in now and said I was the one being rude and crass. I agreed and said "maybe I am but maybe sometimes you need to hear the truth about your President and these folks over here on this side of the Atlantic are preaching you the gospel truth"

When did Conservatives become such absolute charmin-assed cowards afraid of any dissention?

Pain... Deep down inside somewhere they know full well they are the bad guys. But they've walled off that part of their psyche. Reminding of them of this fact sends a shockwave of psychic pain as they monetarily have to mange the cognitive dissonance until they can safely wall of that part of their psyche again.
 
As some of you are aware, we live in Portugal and have for almost 8 years now. And usually the second thing out of our mouths, after explaining NC is midway between NYC and Miami (funny that is a common reference), is to apologize for Trump and to say that we have no support for him or his actions. Luckily, we have yet to meet anyone, local or tourist, that is in support.

Well…..in 2003, right-wingers lost their gourds when the Dixie Chicks criticized Dubya. In 2002, right-wingers questioned the patriotism of Max Cleland in his Senate race against Saxby Chambliss. Cleland was a decorated Vietnam veteran who had left several body parts behind on the battlefield. Chambliss was a chickenhawk who received deferments during the war.

After Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised black fists as the Star Spangled Banner played in 1968 right-wingers went nuts.

Civil rights activists were called uppity n*****s, Commies, traitors, etc. Their buses were fire-bombed, their heads cracked open, many were killed……

There were the “Know Nothings” in the 1850’s and North Carolina’s white-supremacist Red Shirts who responded poorly to Wilmington’s successful black community.

They’ve been candy-assed for eons.

This is both exceptionally true and wickedly funny.

I first wanted to give it the fire emoji for being so true. And then I wanted to give it the laughing emoji for being so funny.

And then I wished for a combination fire and laughing emoji that would represent both things.

And then i realized I had just recreated the "This is fine" meme in emoji form.

And then I despaired just a tiny bit for our country.

I disagree, I think the majority of them think they are the "good guys" saving our country from evil and ruin and they, in their minds, are legitimately full of righteous fury when someone publicly disagrees with that notion.

As someone who lives in Trump country and interacts with Trump voters on a daily basis, I can tell you that both their view of what America is/should be and their understanding of the events that are happening in our country are legitimately 180 degrees different than mine and are extremely hard to reconcile as being the same country in the same time (in the same universe?).
