Ben Sasse Says He Has Terminal Pancreatic Cancer

Mr. Sasse, a former senator from Nebraska, wrote on social media that he had received a diagnosis last week for Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Ben Sasse, a Republican former senator from Nebraska and a former president of the University of Florida, announced on Tuesday that he had received a diagnosis of terminal Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

“Since a bunch of you have started to suspect something, I’ll cut to the chase,” Mr. Sasse, 53, wrote in a long message on X. “Last week I was diagnosed with metastasized, stage-four pancreatic cancer, and am gonna die.”

Mr. Sasse, who has degrees from Harvard, St. John’s College and Yale, was a U.S. senator from Nebraska from 2015 to 2023. Mr. Sasse was appointed president of the University of Florida in November 2022.

Mr. Sasse stepped down last year as Florida’s president, citing the health of his wife, Melissa, who had an aneurysm and a series of strokes in 2007, and had just been diagnosed with epilepsy.

In the Senate, Mr. Sasse was reliably conservative but also a critic of President Trump. In February 2021, Mr. Sasse was one of only seven Republicans in the Senate who voted to convict Mr. Trump on a charge of incitement of insurrection in his second impeachment trial. Mr. Trump was acquitted by the Senate.

Oh my goodness. I feel horrible for him and his family. I just read his social media post announcing the diagnosis. I pray I am never, ever, ever in that situation but if I ever am, I pray that I would face it with the kind of dignity he is.

His wife has had some serious health issues as well. I think their youngest is still at home. Ugh.

Oh goodness gracious. I am so sorry to hear that. I think his youngest is 14, IIRC. Just so sad all the way around. Life is so precious and fragile.

That’s sad. Cancer sucks.

awful.

my mom's best friend died from pancreatic cancer in july. less than 4 months between her diagnosis and her passing.

she fought it until the very end. she was at UNC attempting to get treatment when she passed, she never got palliative care until the very very end.

an absolute warrior.

sending thoughts and prayers to sasse and his family.

Got my dad in 2023. My dad was a doctor and he never complained about anything. Never sick. He had been feeling poorly and my nephew called and said you got to call your dad and tell him to go get checked. I did and next day found tumor on pancreas. He was dead in six days. He was 87. Was with my mom 71 years and basically left her to go to hospice. The quick death was merciful.

Oh my goodness, 79, I cannot even imagine. Six days is stunning. How is your mom doing? Can't imagine losing a partner of 71 years.

I saw him speak about 10 years ago and thought he just might be the kind of pub who talks back to Trump. In spite of him being a huge disappointment, I think he was a decent guy. Sad news

Perhaps until he started embezzling money from U of F or whatever corrupt thing he was doing down there.
