Biorhythms for Carolina @Virginia: Post-Game Discussion

Of course we have. Just not close to as much as them.
The headwind we face when it comes to dook** is it pays for and promotes superior talent for the NBA that can stack up the regular season wins. In turn DSPN and media burnish the dook** brand. Moreover, dook** structures its schedule to minimize playing teams outside HIS such that 30 wins should be the expectation.

That was a week ago during the west coast trip during the 4 games Carolina was terrible on defense. The other 16 games this season the defense has been good to very good, but go ahead and pretend that's Gospel.
Yea. Didn't they say yesterday we were no. 2 in nation in 2 pt FG defense

I posted Sam's tweet primarily to point out that Scheyer is actually a very good basketball coach, and not merely a good assembler of talent.

That said, we have been bad on defense since ACC play started. We have the 224th ranked defense since Jan 1. So we were not just bad in California.

Let's be clear, the vast majority of posters (here and even on IC) are actively rooting for and supporting the current players and coaches. Even the majority of those who think a coaching change needs to be made hope this year's team wins all of their games. (I mean, it's the lack of winning games that has folks wanting a change.)

The things that annoy me about the "sunshine pumpers" are (in no particular order)...

1) The tendency to just shout "All is fine!" no matter how badly the team has played and how poor the results are. It's certainly a small number of posters, but there is a group of Chip Dillers who refuse to admit that there are any real problems with the program.

2) Blaming the players for issues in order to avoid putting the blame on the coach(es). The claims/implications that the players are lazy or unskilled or failing to listen to the coaches and are to blame for lack of team success.

3) Saying that folks are complaining because of "one bad game" or "one bad year". Folks aren't upset over "one bad [anything]", they're upset because the overall performance under Hubert has been consistently lacking.

4) Minimizing the issues of where things are under Hubert vis-a-vis our traditional success. This comes in a couple of forms...

A) Underselling Roy's accomplishments or overselling the dip that the program took for a season or 2 at the very end of Roy's career. Yep, there were a couple of rough years for Roy over the last 4, but those issues were largely addressed and Roy left the program in pretty good shape with a great set of players for Hubert.

B) Overselling the success Hubert has had. An example: Holding up stats like "Hubert has won 20 games every year!" Winning 20 games used to be a fairly significant accomplishment when teams played ~30 games a season but when teams now routinely play 35+ games a season, winning 20 games is no longer the achievement it used to be. (Another version of this is the idea that 2 games in 2022 are essentially a trump card over any other performance issues. Yes, we all enjoyed the end of Coach K's career, but those games don't excuse any or all other performance failures.)

5) Ignoring statistics that show how poorly our team plays on a regular basis. A couple of examples: Looking solely at the win-loss record when advanced metrics show that we're not playing nearly as well as our record would suggest. Or acting like making the NCAAT is an actual accomplishment for a progam the level of Carolina Basketball when we're making it as a low seed.

6) Blaming outside issues for the performance failures under HD, namely the claims that the biggest problems are COVID or NIL or the transfer portal. HD took over during COVID and it can't be reasonably blamed for anything beyond his first season (which was one of his better seasons with how it ended). NIL and the transfer portal is a systemic change and every program in CBB has had to address those changes. Carolina Basketball has more resources and advantages than nearly every other school in D1 and even P4 and should have been better positioned to address those changes rather than floundering due to them.

In short, what annoys me about the "positive folks" is that there is a consistent denial of the problems facing the program and a consistent tendency to blame everyone but HD for what problems are admitted. At some point, when the problems are consistent across years and aren't reasonably addressed, the responsibility correctly lies with the highest leadership of the program.

As far as positivity vs negativity, I think both are annoying when inappropriate and undeserved. I agree that folks on IC who were being negative after yesterday's win were annoying. But it is just as annoying when folks are overly positive when things are pretty obviously going poorly. Being positive or negative alone isn't the issue, it's being the one that isn't supported by the facts of how the program is performing.
I try to be positive because it's something that normally brings joy to my life. All the negativity takes the joy out of it.

"What Do You See? Without Garcia & with Bacot suffering his third frustrating put-back night in a row, I saw a couple of much-maligned wings step-up. Love, who like the entire team (except for Black!) shot poorly showed no fear & took the Hokie by the horns late. Leaky Black shot the ball. Praise be he shot it & it went in & double digits he reached. And Bearded Brady Manek, who frankly looks to favor sitting rather than running sports - who’s up for fishing? - showed considerable intestinal fortitude, hurling bullseye axes from U Mall while urging his earthbound body to a rebound flush & some position paint play that would have made Haystack Calhoun proud! All the while RJ Davis played all but two minutes, valuing the ball like a point guard should, a single turnover to his name, & nailing eight out of nine charity tosses.

I’m still reading the bloviations of the un-satisfy-able just the same. Garcia (who they damned) is GONE! That should have been a 20-point blow-out! Love’s a ball hog! Davis is out-of-control! And of course, Bench Black!! And yes, WANY (what about next year) echoes across the living rooms & man-caves of those couch-coaches as they Pile High the Pyre of Coach Davis’ Adios Bonfire fumbling with their zippos awaiting eagerly a future stumble.

But that time will have to wait - The Unwelcome of Boston College roll up on Wednesday followed by the Wolpfackers of state college outta Raleighwood on Saturday. Plenty of time to gather more wood for the fire. But for now it is a win & heads remain firmly on shoulders, helmeted against the ‘slings & arrows of outrageous fortune’ to be sure, ready to do battle again sooner rather than later."

Our whole backcourt benefitted greatly by UVA’s lack of quickness. Dixon’s handle is maybe what surprises me most, he’s pretty tight with the ball. Nothing like Marcus’s court vision though. Which is another amazing thing about Caleb, that dude sees the floor.
Yeah, I’ve been really impressed with Caleb’s court vision. Not only have I seen him make great passes but I’ve seen him get ball handlers’ attention and point to where they should pass the ball. In addition, he is great with spacing when he runs the floor. I often felt we struggled with good spacing on the break over the past few years.
