Coach Luke Loucks Wisdom = 50

Coach Loucks, an FSU grad and former player, brings an NBA attitude to the court in his first year as the Seminole head coach. Uptempo pace and guard-focused play are the ‘Noles way this season. Robert MacRay leads with 13 ppg and a strong 7 assists per. He’s fifth year and on his third team. Soph Martin Somerville, in from UMass-Lowell hits near 10 ppg and Freshman guard Cam Miles is very involved (8 ppg). The beef in the paint consists of Alex Steen (7 points, 7 rebounds) and Chauncey Wiggins (over from Clemson. He’s 6-10 and scores at 12 ppg. LaJae Jones is a 6-5 wing from St. Bonaventure who scores at a 12 point clip and garners 5 rebounds. French Frosh Thomas Bassong is the first big off the bench – he’s 6-8. There are two 6-11 subs on the pine (Maluk and Muhammad) who provide length and fouls. Senior journeyman Kobe Magee is the utility man at 6-5. He scores at 11 per game and plays guard and wing.

This team scores well (86 per game) but does not shoot for great accuracy – thus they flood the boards and rebound as a team. They distribute the ball relatively well and 55+ of their baskets come off of assists (That number for Carolina is 61%). Their defense is worrisome and steals (9.8 per) and turnovers (a +5 margin) are part of the game plan. Gutsy team featuring veterans (5 seniors) who have been around the block. This is potentially a tough out.

Frontcourt: Wilson is brilliant. Veesaar is down. Stevenson is more with Veesaar than with Wilson.

Wings: Powell has the best look here with a strong Physical and Emotional. Bogavac is low (though his ritmos have been rather unreliable thus far – a birthday anomaly perhaps?).

Guards: Trimble brings some fire to the court while Evans is a smart guy. Derek Dixon has the brains and the desire. Young has the best looks on the team. Don’t count Denis out should he play.

Overall: A troubling look here…Florida State has better biorhythms than Carolina tonight. There is, to be sure, a talent deficit on the side of the team from The Land of Florida Man, but this game has a foreboding look about it. There is a challenge here. Thankfully both teams have been dormant since 12/22 rather than one having played since. The homecourt will help the Heels but there appear to be no heroes tonight save the cleverness of Caleb Wilson, the athleticism of Jonathan Powell, and the sheer “Want-To” of Seth Trimble. The gamblers say UNC should win handily…and they might…but expect some ugliness for ¾ of the contest with Carolina pulling away late. If free throws fall the 14.5 Las Vegas spread is safe…if they don’t, then a tighter margin is likely. Either way this won’t be a cakewalk.

I'll take Caleb's wisdom, Powell's athleticism and Trimble's "want-to" for $1000 Alex... and make it a true Daily Double.

Oh wise and wonderful donbosco, I think your infallible insights are off in regards to tonight's game. FSU has not beaten anybody worth a darn so far this season. Heels SHOULD win by like 18, but might sleep walk a bit in the second half. The Noles clang 3's at a 31.% clip, which ain't near good enough to keep it close tonight.

FSU lost to Florida by only 2 points earlier in the season, but they have also been crushed by Texas A&M, Georgia, Houston and Dayton. Heels should win but by how much will depend on how focused they are coming off the break.

All very true -- they have literally beaten no one in the top 200 I believe. And I do think that we will win and like I said, we'll probably cover...unless we're terrible from the line...something I didn't mention is that FSU fouls around 20 times a game so if they get their way with pace, which is one that we like ourselves, i.e., fast -- there will surely be a lot of fouls and free throws to be shot by Carolina. If we don't hit then this could be a frustrating night. Also see that they go for almost 10 steals per game and force turnovers at a good clip. IF we slip from our latest good turnover rate then that could also be a big negative.

Seth is a very important part of this team!
ETA I’m able to sink Sling and WCHL so I haven’t heard a word from the guys calling the game!
