Coach Zach Chu
Zach Chu is the new coach for the Highlanders and he has installed a game plan that is all about shoot and score. Radford has shot 55% from the field in their two wins (W. Illinois,West Virginia Wesleyan). They are averaging 89.5 points per game. The mountain squad is counting on Clemson transfer #10 Del Jones (6-3, So.15ppg, 5.5apg) and state college man #11 Dennis Parker (6-6, Jr. 14.5ppg, 5rpg) to lead the scoring, and they are. Jaylon Johnson (#3 6-0, Sr. 12ppg) is in from Tennessee Tech (4th school) to call the plays. Mari Jordan (#5 6-5, So. 7.5ppg, 3.5rpg) is the fourth guard in the starting line-up while big man #21 Tyson Brown (6-9, Gr. 10.5ppg, 5rpg) is the inside presence. Three foreigners, #06 Louis Jordan 6-9, Sr. (Eng) 5ppg, 1.5rpg, #12 Gabriel Ferreira 6-10, Fr. (Brz) 2ppg, 2.5rpg, and the promising Dane #07 Frederik Erichsen (6-9, Fr. 10ppg, 5rpg) will also spell in the pivot. The Radford roster is composed of 9 newcomers (only 4 call the Highlanders their only NCAA home) and one suspects this is The Way of The Moment. Coach Chu played at Richmond and then spent 9 years as a strategist in the NBA. Last year he did similar duties at SMU. One has to imagine they’ll hit Roy Williams Court in the Dean E. Smith Center with the throttle wide open.
Frontcourt: Veesaar looks to dominate while both High and Brown have strong Ritmos to match.
Wings: Caleb Wilson has little in the tank biorhythmically but he’s a watch and see candidate – like only a few before him, defiance of boundaries appears the main mark on his chart. Jarin Stevenson is a Mensa Man tonight while Luka Bogavac is right there with the Chathamite on the Phi Beta Kappa track. Jonathan Powell has the highest-flying arcs on the team and should impress. He will see considerably more court time while Trimble is out. His defensive prowess has been the buzz but don’t sleep on his shooting.
Guards: Of course there will be no Seth Trimble on the court – a broken bone in his left forearm will sideline the heart of the team for an indefinite amount of weeks – but that’s not his dominant hand and he is not immobilized and should stay in shape during his recuperation. Pointing to the the Ohio State Game for the earliest return, the New Year and SMU at least. Kyan Evans is running on smarts tonight while Derek Dixon has emotion to boost his play. Jaydon Young is fired and solid physically. His minutes should increase as should those of Dixon.
Overall: This ought to be a game played at a nigh frenzied pace. 48 of 129 Highlander shots have been from beyond the arc – they’ve hit 17 of 52 for 32% from downtown [Originally said 17 of 48 or 35% -- correction made]. They’ll likely up that long-shot frequency tonight. Jaylon Johnson is hitting 45% and Brennan Rigsby 50%. Carolina will likely start Bogavac and Stevenson on the Wings – and will be even taller than with Trimble in the line-up. The Highlander appreciation of speed should be shared. Carolina is averaging 28 treys shot per game and 9 made for 32%. Of interest will be whether or not the shots-taken average goes up or if the Heels seek out the rim with run-outs and a set inside game. Carolina is predicted to win by 21.5 or thereabouts. That sounds good but don’t be surprised if they take 30 in their margin of victory.
