This evening’s tilt finds the Tar Heels home in Chapel Hill and a Snow Day with classes cancelled for the Tar Heels after a fine junket to Atlanta and a win over the Bugs. The Oranges are no strangers to “Satan’s Dandruff” as friend Ben Moore terms it but then the young men on that squad hail from such far-flung places as Mali, Australia, Florida, Guinea, Oregon, and California (one young man is actually a Syracusean). But then who knows where goes the weather or “which way the wind blows” in these unsettled times? Carolina just put a solid whuppin’ on the Technical school down south and have had short turnaround time – ‘Cuse has had even less between games, beating Notre Dame in the frozen North on Saturday evening and then making their way to the frozen South — the land of ditched SUVs and NO-BREAD and MILK the next morning. Both teams will likely be stretching their line-ups tonight to respond to their quick returns to the court.
Frontcourt: Veesaar is on the rise, Wilson is brilliant and physical, and Stevenson is athletic. High and Brown are both strong.
Wings: Bogavac is tops physically while Powell is in a dip but remains positive. Jaydon Young is sharp.
Guards: Trimble is physical, fired, and motivated. Evans is fast and overall above the fold. Dixon is great across the board.
Overall: The Orange 13-9 (4-5) are a hard-driving team with #11 Naithan George (6-3, 9.5ppg, 5.4apg, 31% 3pt) and #2 J.J. Starling (6-4 12ppg, 32% 3pt) leading the way. Both guards go for the rim with determination. Syracuse is not a tall team and does not go over 6-9 but they have plenty of fouls to give and likely will. Bahaman Sophomore Donnie Freeman leads the team in scoring (18.2ppg) and rebounds well (7.3rpg). He has a motor wound up tight, will shoot Threes and is good at the line. 6-8 Nate Kingz from Oregon and Oregon State scores at an 11 points per game clip. William Kyle, a 6-9 senior, grabs 7.5 rebounds per game to lead the team and scores 9.5. He’s been to South Dakota State and UCLA previously and is majoring in Communication and Rhetorical Studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Freshman wing Kiyan Anthony (6-5) manages 8.8 ppg. This team is not a tough out and Adrian Autrey is an up-and-coming coach with a dedication to his alma mater that he works to transmit to his squad. He’s also from Monroe, North Carolina and understands how to Hate Carolina – another thing he will work hard to gift his players.
Tonight’s scrap in the Dean Smith Center may resemble a Snow Game given the cancellation of classes and icy conditions across the Piedmont of North Carolina. Would that students be permitted into the courtside seats and be fueled by the fervor of a Three-day, likely Four-day Weekend. The gamblers say Carolina by 11.5. Ritmos say Syracuse is on an upswing and will play well but the Tar Heels will prevail by 6.
