Look-In: Wake students have been warned not to rush the court after they win tonight. Carolina has lost 3 straight at Lawrence Joel but UNC shellacked the deacs last time out in Chapel Hill behind 36 points from R.J. Davis. This year, as last, Wake Forest is led by Hunter Sallis (6-5, #23) who is elite, scoring 19.5 ppg, rebounding (4rpg), and passing (3apg). A three-guard line-up means that Cameron Hildreth (6-4, 14 ppg, Sr/4 years at the same school) is on the wing and Ty-Laur Johnson (#8, 6-0 Soph – 5ppg) will man the point. None of them shoot well from distance. The team makes 6.2 Threes per game (UNC hits 7.3) and shoots 28.7% overall (UNC shoots 32.6%). They’ve got a big man in 7-0 Efton Reid who scores at 7 a game and rebounds at 6. Their real board man is Tre’von Spiller, who at 6-7 grabs 9 caroms a contest and scores 10 a game with accurate shooting (55%). Past those five the Demon Deacs are shallow – Parker Friedrichsen has fallen off the pace from last year when he was a spark off the bench but he still gets his 18 minutes per game while Davin Crosby is a promising gunner with a sore toe. Freshman Juke Harris of Salisbury will see the most time in the frontcourt (6-7, 6 ppg, 3 rpg). Sallis is a star and can hit for 30+ on any given night and he has the Green Light from anywhere in Winston-Salem. Coach Forbes is a cagey customer.

Frontcourt: Washington has the physical and Lubin joins him in that category adding in sagacity. Withers is much fired up. Ty Claude languishes with solid arcs and young James Brown is a smart guy.

Wings: Powell is a thinker and Jackson has much zeal. Tyson is brainy.

Guards: Low marks for Cadeau and soaring ones for Davis meet a sharp Trimble.

Overall: Wake plays tough defense and they hold teams to 66 a game. Carolina scores 82 a game. Something has to give. This game has massive implications for BOTH teams: The league race, a potential tie-breaker in a couple of places, the post-season – Oh, and despite most Tar Heel fans’ general indifference toward the Baptists (or perhaps because of it) – they hate Carolina as much as anyone, even wolpfackers and dookies. Vitriol will be thick and deep over there tonight. If the Biorhythms are any indication this is an R.J. Davis game with some heady play from his supporting crew. Would love to see Washington and Lubin on the court together (very unlikely) but both should play well. Powell and Trimble look to be stoppers. Jackson did not show out against Stanford and his rhythms are not outstanding tonight – but he does have good positive energy and that can mean solid team ball (the great ones can take a single good arc and make a game of it – such has been the lessons of the past). It is going to be hellish hostile over there. Man it looks close…Carolina by 2.

Pause the TV as the referee tosses up the opening jump ball. Gave the WCHL link playing. When they announce who recovered the jump ball unpause.

I can’t believe I am typing this, but for the first time in my memory I find I just don’t care very much. I went to as many games as my schedule permitted in the 8-20 year and was all in during the 2020 disaster season — right through watching COVID get real for Americans as UNC got killed by Syracuse in what ended up being the last game of the ACC Tournament, as the NBA announced it was canceling all games until the COVID risks could be figured out.

I’ve been to the ACC Tournament and every round of the NCAA Tournament over the years to see UNC play. I have pegged memories a lot of things in my life around connections to hoops.

I dunno. Maybe the portal stuff broke my connection to the team somehow? Kinda sad — I hope to get it back, because I miss the feeling.

Take it away, Gordon Lightfoot:

I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back

Even though the stats say otherwise - look for Wake to shoot lights out from 3.
Hope I'm wrong.
I don't think the students will feel the need to "storm the court" if they get the W.
Won't watch. May rewind and watch tomorrow if Heels can pull out a squeaker. I do not have high hopes.

They absolutely need to win this game. Hopefully they come out with intensity and purpose. JWash and VAL need to keep playing well.

Wake is not a good rebounding team and is a poor 3FG% team, but very good defensively. Vegas has Carolina -1.5. kenpom has Carolina 73-72 (55%).
