Has anyone read the book Badlands? I'm listening to it while I drive from WS to Durham on a regular basis and it is astonishing in its narrative of wanton killing (mostly unrelated to WW II) by Stalin and Hitler. What's really scary is how, at least to how Snyder portrays things, both "governments" used propaganda and control in a way to ramp up towards the bloodshed. This book delves deeply into how Stalin decimated the Ukraine population in the early 30s and really helps place why there might be such fierce fighting now.
What really scared me was the early machinations of both totalitarian regimes to create "reasons" for the choices made. I, and this is just me, can feel the ghosts of those regime moves happening now. In no way am I talking about mass murder, but rather the reasoning used by both regimes to gain and consolidate power.
Fascinating read/listen, and proof that humans are nature's killing machines.
