Calabash/NC Seafood Thread

As memory serves, there's a NC BBQ thread here. So, I figured I'd make a NC seafood thread.

Long story short, I'm returning to NC soon. I have a nice AirBnB spot on Holden. Right on the beach. I'm wondering what are the best Calabash seafood places around? Any ideas?

Any NC seafood ideas/recommendations can go here too. I remember the old fish houses of home. Great stuff! Don't get that just anywhere.

I apologize in advance if I don't respond immediately. I'm kind of in-and-out on this forum but appreciate you all!

The last time I ate at a Calabash seafood restaurant was two summers ago, and my daughter had an allergic reaction to something. She broke out in hives later that night and had never had an allergic reaction like that before. Ended up going to an urgent care place to get a shot. Had her tested when we got home from vacation and everything came back negative for allergies to food and medicine. Have no idea what made her have that reaction.

Anyway, that probably doesn't help at all.

No, it doesn't, but I'm glad your daughter survived. Jeez!

It's not the calabash style fried seafood buffet but Provision company in Supply, just over the bridge from Holden has great seafood and a great view.

Not a seafood fan. But my then girlfriend, now wife of 43 years loves seafood. While we had both heard about Calabash, neither of us had been there. So, one Saturday afternoon, we found outselves near Calabash and decided to check it out. We drove into Calabash and saw restaurant after restaurant with a flashing signs out front promising "Free Baked Potato" or "Free Salad Bar." We drove around long enough to find a battered restaurant, down by the creek, with no flashing signs, but with a line out the door at 4 pm. We decided this was the place. And it was.

That sounds like a strange package.

Is Texas pete cocktail different than Texas Pete hot sauce?
It is. It's sweeter and smoother than what most people think of when they think of cocktail sauce, but it hits different on that shrimp burger.

If you get the scallop burger, get the tartar sauce instead.

Haven't been to Calabash in about eight years, but agreed on the Calabash Seafood Hut, and Dockside in Calabash is also good. It's located right on the docks so you get a good view of the boats coming in and out. It always seems crazy busy, but our family always thought it was worth the wait. If you're ever in Southport Fishy Fishy is also good, and it's also built right on the docks.

Not your typical Calabash cuisine, but the Boundary House Restaurant in Calabash is a nice change of pace.

Silver Hill Grill is a converted mobile home on the left on 130 on the way to Shallotte.
Call ahead and order takeout as they're slow. Their cocktail sauce is horrible; that stuff in little packets so take your own if that's a big deal breaker.
Not high level cuisine but good fried seafood and ranks high for bang for the buck. Jerome's in Shallotte has a lunch buffet that usually includes some type of seafood in addition to the usual country cooking choices.
The best choice is to go to Captain Pete's or Holden Beach Seafood, buy your own and cook it yourself.

I am sorry. But it was down by the river 45 years ago and had a line out the door at 4 pm. I just checked Google satellite and their are a couple it could have been. I could give-up and say, "Oh, it's the one that burned down in 2023." But I really don't know.

Growing up, one night of every Myrtle Beach vacation week was dedicated to Calabash seafood. No putt-putt, no Wings, no fireworks, no boardwalk…just the best fried seafood, hushpuppies, and sweet tea on Earth followed by the night of oily squirts that it cost. Good times.
