Look-In: Boomers and Gen-Xers one-time ballers may fondly recollect time spent on the campus of Campbell College in the heat of the summer going to basketball camp in the days when Coach Danny Roberts (a Chathamite) ran the athletics department there and had some pretty good teams. These Camels are 5-7 with wins over Newberry, Pfeiffer, Navy, Green Bay, and The Citadel. Memorable losses have come to Ohio State and Virginia along the way. The thing this squad does best of all is shoot free throws, hitting at an 80.8% for Top Ten in the NCAA. They are a journeyman crew with players hailing from Vanderbilt, Purdue, Holy Cross, and Ole Miss to name a few. The leading scorer is 6-3 Jasin Sinani who hits for 12.4 and grabs 5.3 rebounds. He’s followed by several wings who score 7 to 9 ppg: Nolan Darsey (9.3, 6-6), Cam Gregory (7.8, 6-5), Terren Frank (8.8, 6-8)and Colby Duggan (8.5, 6-7). The Camels also bring Bigs in Israel Yaw (3.3, 6-9), Eric Van Der Heidjin (2.8 6-9) and Caleb Zirliene (6.3, 6-8). Lastly Tasos Cook is a 6-2 guard (2.4) and Bragi Godmundssen (6.4, 6-5) roll in from the bench. Ten men should see good time with Sinani, Darsey, Frank, and Duggan seeing the most. This is the Other End of the portal in today’s game. A team of moderately talented players, cobbling together an education while playing the game that they love anywhere that they can land. The world of many Mid-Majors on display.
Frontcourt: Tar Heel Bigs Washington and Lubin have good physicals and Claude is a very smart man. Great enthusiasm marks the games of James Brown and JayLen Withers.
Wings: Not a lot of high marks here for Carolina. Ian Jackson is fired up but all the rest are squarely below the fold.
Guards: R.J. Davis is topped out physically. Like the wings, Trimble and Cadeau have no remarkable looks.
Overall: UNC should whip the Camels but it won’t be Biorhythmic Driven as collectively Carolina is down. Inside is the only bright spot in Chapel Hill for this team this evening. Lubin and Washington ought to shine brightly with a cagey Claude doing good work. James Brown minutes should be shiny as well. A few Camels have good rhythms tonight so expect some good play from a well-coached squad. The depth, such as it is, of Campbell also bodes a rough game so the Tar Heels should come prepared to be jostled and bumped throughout. Frankly, this game looks to be ugly and the kind that fuels the gloom and doom crowd. Here’s hoping to see an athletically charged R.J. Davis get buckets, a calm Cadeau feed the bigs, and some new offensive wrinkles and a disciplined defensive intensity from everyone just the same. Las Vegas says Carolina by 27.5. The Biorhythms say tone that down a tad and go with UNC by 22.
