“… This is foreign interference in US public policy. A price has got to be paid for this.“

Between Hassett's "rude and dismissive" remarks and Bessent throwing shade over the Blue Jay's loss it's clear that our administration is treating foreign and trade policy like a clique of shallow high school teenagers - it's Mean Girls in charge of trade and foreign policy. Except that the Mean Girls would likely have done a better job than the clowns currently running the show. "Hey, let's insult and trash talk our closest rivals and then ask them to back off their boycotts of American products and vacation travel here and cut a good deal with us! That'll work for sure!"

Why does America hate money?

New data from Statistics Canada shows total Canadian air passenger traffic in October was up by 4.5 per cent to five million travellers from the same time last year, but the number of people on U.S.-bound trips is down 8.9 per cent to 1.2 million travellers.

In what world is the US safer after Trump pushes it's next door neighbor (with the largest unguarded border in the world) into the hands of its biggest global rival?

Nova Scotia is wholly controlled by the Conservative party. They have a super majority right now and the last election reduced the Liberal party down to 2 seats (out of 55). The governing party of Canada fell into third place behind normal third place party NDP (9 seats). It's a crazy amount of power in the Conservative party at a local level.

Despite that, here's two things that happened today.

They have raised it 7 times since they took over in 2021, with two more planned for this year for a total of $4 an hour in 5 years. Even with the exchange rate adjustment, it is still twice as much as most red states in the US. (The counter argument to this is it is still below the living wage here and these increases are relatively paltry but considering the stagnation you find in minimum wages in the Red states - for example Georgia's minimum wage is less than I made at Harris Teeter ... in 1996 - it's outright generous in comparison. )

Just to give you an idea how things work in another place, even under Conservative rule.

Good program here meant to stop injuries at the hands of police who were being asked to do a job they are not trained for

A community-based response team being piloted in Dartmouth, N.S., offering an alternative model to police to support people in crisis, is expanding to 24-hour service.

The Crisis Assistance and Response Team, known as CARE, launched in October and is moving to around-the-clock support as of Jan. 19.

The Halifax Regional Municipality’s community safety team oversees the program, with Souls Harbour Rescue Mission providing the staff who offer in-person support.

“Not every crisis, not every situation is a police matter. And the nice thing about our team, we're coming in plain clothes,” explained Matthew Reid, the director of mobile ministries with Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.

...

It responds to calls that come in through 211 Nova Scotia.

The team responds to calls that are not violent or clinical in nature and not emergencies, through a consent-based, trauma-informed approach which can connect people to a range of other services if needed.

They deal with a wide range of issues including calls for mental health support, help with substance use as well as food or housing needs.

“It's about meeting people in a safe place and having community supports for people,” Reid said. “We can give them supports that are needed and resources that are out there and hopefully make their day better.”

US conservatives have been sidelined and have been replaced by populist Fascists (MAGA). Hopefully Canada can keep the Fascists marginalized

Should be interesting reading for the “we must stop the expansion of Chinese influence around the globe at all costs,” crowd.
I am hoping it is somewhat of a bluff, but if Canada loses its auto industry because of tariffs, there is little reason to keep blocking Chinese vehicle imports and that alone will melt a lot of frosty relations between the two countries. China really wants a toehold in the North American automobile market.
