Trump tariffs on Mexico to be paused one month, Sheinbaum says, as she announces troop border deployment

Mexico agrees to sending troops to the border which happened previously during the Biden administration without threats of tariffs and Trump agrees to stop gun smuggling from the U.S. into Mexico...

great use of leverage Donald !

First they dismissed the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Board (which I posted in the general firings thread as a start), but close on the heels of that news comes this:

Bessent Takes Helm of Consumer Finance Watchdog, Orders Halt to Work

CFPB is told to cease efforts on enforcement actions, active litigation

"Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is ordering a freeze to work at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, after being named its acting director by President Trump.

In an internal email Monday, Bessent’s office directed CFPB staff to cease much of the bureau’s work, including on enforcement actions and decisions about active litigation. The email also directs staff to suspend the effective dates for rules that had been completed, but aren’t yet in effect.

Bessent’s appointment is the beginning of what is expected to be a rollback of many of the agency’s actions under the Biden administration, which included rules capping overdraft fees and banning the use of medical debt by credit-reporting companies.

Biden appointee Rohit Chopra was ousted on Friday, and Trump has yet to name a candidate to lead the CFPB on a permanent basis. It remains unclear what approach the administration will take to the agency during Trump’s second term as president.

Republicans have long wanted to rein in or even eliminate the agency. ..."

"... The CFPB, created under a Wall Street legislative overhaul after the 2007-08 financial crisis, has the authority to regulate financial products such as mortgages and credit cards. Under Chopra, the bureau took an expansive view of the products it could regulate, sparking legal challenges by industry groups to some of its proposed rules."

WTF? Hoping for Luigi is not ideation.

But anyway, exactly how far does this policy go? Is it a problem to note that authoritarianism is almost always defeated with some level of violence? TIs it wrong to note how Mussolini ended? It is a fact that the Iraqis killed not just Saddam but his sons. The Bolsheviks and the Jacobins killed the whole royal family. Is it wrong to point that out?
How about you start a new thread to argue this rather than derail this one.

Lol @ Trump.

The great negotiator, my ass.

How am I wrong? It' s not just Jefferson. "Ideating homicide" by nycfan's definition is an integral part of our intellectual tradition and heritage. It is almost impossible to talk about political theory without confronting the subject. What about Malcolm X? Eugene Debs?

One of the most important influences on the Founding Fathers was John Locke. Locke's philosophy is steeped in a tradition of discussing violence. Locke's philosophy, after all, was a direct response to Thomas, "life is short, brutish and nasty" Hobbes. And Locke's solution, and the solution of the Framers, and the solution of the county through its entire history, has been the rule of law. The possibility of the rule of law is the answer to Hobbes.

To say that eliminating the rule of law risks taking us back to Hobbes cannot possibly be a bad thing to say. And since the oligarchs seem to think they are all-powerful and cannot be stopped as they eviscerate the rule of law, then what else am I supposed to hope? Musk is a uniquely dangerous person. He will cause lots of deaths if unchecked. He will kill a lot of people.

More importantly, ELON MUSK is out there calling for homicide. He is actively ideating homicide. If he were to die, many lives will be saved.
super, the history lesson is deflecting from “nycfan would short circuit.”

“… Chopra was tapped by former President Joe Biden to lead the bureau in 2021. The position has a five-year term, but the Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that the president can fire the director at will.

In a resignation letter posted on X, Chopra said watchdog agencies such as the CFPB work to enforce laws to "check the enormous influence that powerful firms have over our daily lives."

… "The incoming Administration has a unique and important opportunity to institute meaningful reforms to the CFPB, in both the immediate and long-term, that can help transform the agency into the credible and durable regulator Americans deserve," the Consumer Bankers Association wrote in a white paper in January.

The association called for some immediate changes, including rescinding CFPB's rules on overdrafts and credit card late fees.

… At a hearing of the Senate Banking Committee in December, ranking member Tim Scott, R-S.C., called for Chopra to resign on Trump's first day in office and expressed disgust that the CFPB had continued to issue rules and reports in the waning weeks of the Biden administration. …”

How would/did you feel about discussions of Biden's assassinations? I got no use for the asshole myself but it's bad for the country, bad for the world and bad for the office if it were to happen. Most particularly is how much better off we'd be with him disgraced than any sort of thing that could be twisted into martyrdom. The Cult of St. Trump would be a vomitous abomination on the world.

WSJ Editorial Board hates Trump’s tariffs but loves shutting down the CFPB.

"Mr Beattie, did you say that 'competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work'?"
"Senator, I'm focused on the future."
"I'll ask again: Mr Beattie, did you say that 'competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work'?"
"Anonymous smears."
"I have the tweet right here! Mr Beattie, did you not say that 'competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work'?"
"I resent your characterization of my words. My account was hacked."
