Look-In: By every standard measure of the year dook has Carolina’s number today. Kenpom even says they’re the tallest team in the country. And they’ve certainly got a home court advantage when playing in The Tool Box on their faux gothic grounds. Caleb Foster (5.6 ppg) is 6-5 and one of the few North Carolinians on campus, Tyrese Procter is 6-6 (10 ppg), Isaiah Evans is 6-6 (6.9, 45% Threes), Sion James is 6-6 (7.6 37% Threes), Kon Knueppel is 6-7 (13 ppg, 37% Threes), Mason Gillis is 6-6 (4.9), Khaman Maluach is 7-2 (8.3), Patrick Ngongba is 6-11 (2.7), Possible returnee Maliq Brown is 6-9 (2.5), and the latest Great White Hope Cooper Flagg is 6-9 (20 ppg, 8 rpg, & 4 apg with 33% from Threes). Maybe Caleb Foster and Maliq Brown will be there next year so pay no attention to their faces (their numbers are in the biorhythm chart above). Most folks are expecting a slaughter today and that might very well happen. That said, arcane forces rule the outcomes in this dichotomy and while the record book has UNC clearly superior over the long haul ( 145-117 ) in the modern era alone the stats are closer. And then there was the recent year of Ratface’s two funerals.
Frontcourt: Washington (should he play) is ALL Emotion. Lubin brings equal positivity. Ty Claude is strong and a thinker, and freshman James Brown athletic.
Wings: Drake Powell is fired and strong. Ian Jackson joins the Chathamite in that. Tyson overmatches both. Withers is a middlin’ force.
Guards: Cadeau is fast and fiery while Trimble is physically soaring and positive. R.J. Davis’ biorhythms have bottomed out (but read on).
Overall: These young Tar Heels are motivated. Many have never faced the type of hostility in store for them late this afternoon from the embarrassing circus created by dick vitale lo so many years ago. Joel Berry probably said it best about playing in buck dook’s outhouse, ““It’s kind of like going back to play in a high school,” in Cameron Indoor with “the fans right there on the court doing the twinkle fingers or whatever.” In all honesty today Carolina has the rhythms over the dook starters – in particular when looking at dook’s Big Three of Flagg, Knueppel, and Procter. Unfortunately, their bench looks primed to roll. UNC has a worrisome look in R.J. Davis’ gooseggs across the board but he has the heart of a lion and actually knows his way around Carolina and Chapel Hill, i.e., he knows what he loves, so the worry about him is minimal. Powell, raised up right down the road, also knows the depth of this happening. The players and fans at dook, passing briefly through North Carolina as they do, always make me curious as to what it is that they believe they understand about these contests. They’ve got their cheer sheets though. Clearly I am motivated by time spent with Will Blythe’s writing in which he put into good words how we feel. Hark The Sound Tar Heel Warriors. Hark.The.Sound. Carolina Biorhythms will make no predictions today but know that Las Vegas has completely written off the University of North Carolina and is calling for a 16 point MassaCree in derm. Might happen.
What else could happen? R.J. Davis could give the dookies something similar to remember him by as did his one-time backcourt mate Caleb Love. The Freshmen Powell and Jackson could fearlessly show-out, in particular Powell who has true Carolina Blue Blood coursing through his veins from birth. Fired up and motivated Washington and Lubin could join a mad-as-hell Ty Claude (who, being from Goldsboro also knows in the same way as Drake Powell) to play above their ranking and take the paint. And Trimble and Cadeau could keep their wits about them and dominate the floor. Might happen.
