Is this why there's no toilet paper at Costco?
I read an article today about how 90% of the toilet paper used in the U.S. is made in the U.S., Canada or Mexico. The toilet paper industry is worried that there may be no way to export their product thus creating a surplus of toilet paper. But Americans are hoarding it. This is our electorate.

ETA: I went in a Costco last week and they had more toilet paper than I had ever seen. Like stacked half way to the ceiling and the toilet paper aisle was one-way because only one buggy could get through it with inventory stacked in the aisle. I was like WTF but I guess they knew the run was coming.

I could be wrong-but I doubt it-LOL. It strikes me that the Shippping industry is swimmimg in profits since COVID-their rates have gone up astronomicaly . Contract is up.. New contract should be hard core

Yeah their timing is odd. So raise a stink and maybe you get the guy who will disband your union and fire all of you
Saw a right wing conspiracy theory today that the ILA is being paid off to strike by Democrats to cause an economic crisis that will then be leveraged as an excuse to indefinitely suspend the election because they know Trump is gonna win 🤡

This Washington Post editorial also makes the case that fear of automation and losing jobs is the real issue.

There have been studies out of some West Coast facilities that the fear of job loss due to automation is very much overblown and few if any dock workers lose their jobs. They did find big improvements in dock worker safety and a big advantage of being able to run the ports 24/7.

It seems more likely they'd lose their job to automation if 2 men cost the same that 3 used to. And machines can't go on strike either.

It hasn't really panned out that way according to the editorial. First of all, only the bigger ports get most of the automation. And the ones that do get automation handle more traffic and work around the clock. Jobs either decline very slightly or not at all.
