Elon in Charlotte

Elon is a true success story. When I moved to Burlington 55 years ago Elon was a small college of about 800 students. Today it is a growing university with an enrollment of over 6,000. They use to play their football games at Burlington Williams’ stadium.

Don't know if it is true or not, but the story back in the day was that Elon College had a "friendly" admission policy back when there was a draft and there was a student deferment from the draft. And a lot of kids were able to successfully avoid the draft and Vietnam due to Elon. And when these people went on to have successful careers, they remembered Elon and contributed correspondingly. One thing lead to another, . . ., and Elon is today one of the finest small universities in the United States and one of the reasons why North Carolina is really growing. THANK YOU ELON and all its graduates who made its reputation.

Daughter just graduated from there. Great kid who was very involved but certainly no academic star in HS. I got over my condescending attitude I had for it back in the day when I read the book 'Transforming a College', given to me by a friend in education, and pretty much made her go. The experience she had was beyond our dreams for her. The encouragement and appreciation her professors had for her was off the charts. She wound up being a TA in a science class (NOT her forte), worked as a writing tutor and for the English department in an administrative role. She had FUN, and met and became great friends with kids from all over the country (and her likely future husband). I simply can't say enough great things about the school.

I’ve heard the same story. The campus has grown a great deal and they are still adding on. They recruit students from the northeastern part of the country. And a lot of them come from wealthy families. This couple that are friends of ours bought a house just off campus to rent to students. They said it was nothing for the students who rented from them to leave all their furniture they had bought for the tear when they went home. The parents didn’t want to mess with having to get it moved so they just left it. Our friends usually just donate the stuff to charities in the Burlington area.

Kind of surprising the UNC system doesn't have something in charlotte. The two public law schools in North Carolina are in chapel Hill and Durham.

They aren't that expensive to start up compared to a med school or even an engineering school. They are a little bit more expensive than business schools that have sprouted up like weeds in the last couple of decades, but not that much.

I know a couple of Queens alums who aren't wild about this "merger."
When we first moved to Charlotte, Queens was in the process of admitting men for the first time. I have a cousin in Charlotte and we arranged to have dinner out. This was the first time I was meeting his wife. He was a Davidson graduate and she was a Queens graduate. So I somewhat mischeviously asked her about Queens admitting men. What I didn't know was that she was the current President of the Queens Alumnea organization and her life had been an absolute hell for the previous year as the hallowed halls of Queens readied itself to be defiled by men. She launched into me with barely contained rage as she "mansplained" to me that men or no men wasn't the choice. The choice, she let me know was men or close the school down and she greatly preferred keeping it open. Her husband, my cousin, wasn't laughing at me, but it was a close thing. All I could do was sagely nod my understanding and when she started to wind down I was able to express my admiration for how successfully Queens was navigating the post-baby-boom higher education environment.

I get that, but Queens is exactly the type of small college that is at extreme financial risk over the next few years. Their endowment is only about $165 million.
Agreed. Their administration was clear-eyed enough to understand that. I think the alumni will feel better when the path forward is more concrete. What will the school be called? They are concerned their degrees from Queens will get lost in the shuffle.

The concept is sound, but it will all come down to execution.

One thing is certain....there is little to no room for Elon to grow the Queens campus in that Myers Park footprint.

I grew up a few blocks from what was then Queens College. It was an all women’s school throughout most of my childhood. Most of the baby sitters I had growing up were students at Queens.

The county allocated/loaned Queens land for athletic facilities behind Marion Diehl center on Tyvola back in the 00's. Wonder what the fate of those will be?

Hopefully this works out better than Charlotte School of Law....

I still call it Queens College. It just sounds better. For that matter, Elon University still doesn't sound right to me.

Same.

When I was in college Elon was still the Fighting Christians. They actually had pretty strict rules back then (e.g., curfew).

Sounds like they're going with something like Elon University, Queens Campus. I really do understand the concern. I probably wouldn't be as enthusiastic about it if I were a Queens alum. But I'm confident the effect this will have on their degrees is neutral at best, and it may actually help.

I think the existing footprint will be fine for a long time. Parking will be the biggest issue, especially if they build on some of their current lots.

I see this as completely different than Charlotte School of Law. Queens already has a solid (albeit not well known) brand, and Elon's is even better. And the combined school will have an endowment in the $550 million range, which is still a little light but far more stable than the status quo.

I’m not even sure where they have room to build around their main campus. It’s all pretty compact.
