I think Ramrouser is right that no one outside the beltway cares about this. Doesn’t mean that it’s not an embarrassment, but I don’t think it should be the focus. Keep your eyes on the ball because they want people to forget about the DOGE cuts.
This is a hundred times worse than buttery males. And plenty of people cared about that. Why is this worse you say? Because Hillary’s server was setup to be secure, was private and unknown generally, was not used to discuss discrete future and ongoing military operations, and as far as we know never included reporters on sensitive communications. They texted the reporter the target list and the sequence of the operation for crying out loud! If we were fighting someone other than the Houthis were in real trouble.

Lock them up! Lock them up! Lock them up!

I agree. People cared about that because the right wing media ginned it up and because it was Hillary Clinton. The left doesn’t have the same voter base or outrage machine for this to matter, especially come 2028.

Sadly, anyone who pays enough attention to know about this episode either already votes D or makes excuses to vote R. They only pretend to care about stuff like this when it’s a Democrat.

“… But this latest lapse fits into a disturbing broader pattern, with serious implications for our national security.

U.S. military commanders see easily avoidable leaks like this and worry about operational security. At minimum, when the most senior defense leaders are information security risks, it adds another factor to planning that’s already quite complex.

U.S. intelligence partners see failures like this and conclude America can’t be trusted. They have to operate under the assumption that any sensitive information given to the United States could be accidentally leaked by top officials. Not to mention the possibility that President Trump or longtime Putin sympathizer Tulsi Gabbard, the new director of national intelligence, will give it away to adversaries. The loss of trust damages counterterrorism, insight into foreign governments, and other national security goals.

If these idiots are accidentally roping in the editor of the Atlantic on secret war deliberations, what are the chances they’re making other serious information-security mistakes, including ones that create openings for foreign intelligence agencies? Probably pretty high. …”

“…Recall that, less than a month after first taking office in 2017, Trump conducted an emergency meeting on a surprise North Korea ballistic missile launch with Japan’s prime minister at Mar-a-Lago, in view of resort guests with smartphones. The president’s Florida beach club/home is easily accessible, and multiple unauthorized individuals have made it past security, including a suspected Chinese spycarrying a laptop, external drives, and four phones.

Just two months into his first term, the president blurted out highly sensitive intelligence from a foreign partner to Russia’s ambassador and foreign minister in the Oval Office. It wasn’t illegal—the commander-in-chief has the power to disclose classified information—but it served no national interest, and looked like an attempt to impress the Russian officials. The information came from Israel, and concerned a spy placed high inside ISIS in Syria, which was led at the time by Bashar al Assad, a Russian ally and Israeli adversary.

Those are just two early examples. Trump intervened to get his son-in-law Jared Kushner a top White House position even though Kushner couldn’t pass the standard background check.

… After leaving office, Trump illegally took documents containing national security secrets, including some pertaining to nuclear weapons, and kept them in unsecure spaces at Mar-a-Lago.

… Someone might get fired to contain the embarrassment, but it probably won’t improve anything, as Trump prizes loyalty more than competence. And his broader priority is clear: America’s president doesn’t mind if his administration’s actions weaken the United States—so long as he gains more domestic power for himself. To him that counts as a good deal.“

Remember Hillary and her emails?? The whataboutisms just never end from the left. More textbook TDS all-around from the hypocrites on this board. The left and its media machine are hell-bent on destroying Trump and what he's trying to do for our country."
Or the right. People should worry more about concepts and principles and not about which letter is next to the name of the person who fucked up. Hillary didn't have her IT people use DoD-level of data wiping, and smash cell phones with hammers, because she had nothing to hide.

Conversely, this is a significant fuck up and that fact is independent of the letter next to the name

Yep, that was deliberate and is a parody poast of one of our particular MAGA posters here who is the self-appointed ZZL arbiter of 1) identifying whataboutisms 2) what constitutes hypocrisy and 3) which media sources are credible, and which are not.
Got it. I should have paid attention to the username. Forgot who I was responding to for a moment, there. Sometimes parody is so well written that it sounds like the real thing.

LOLOLOLOLOL that was actually even better than I anticipated!

Look, what’s a little fucking around with the boys and sharing top secret national security and military operations plans on unsecured text chain that is likely being monitored by the Kremlin?!? Who among us hasn’t endangered the lives of US military personnel on our group text with the boys, am I right?

It was a predictable response from an unserious person.

It's no doubt a mistake but one that can be corrected going forward. This is the ultimate inside Washington story. No one outside the beltway, other than Trump haters, cares.

I prefer to focus on the substance: this Administration is now taking decisive action against the Houthi rebels. The Biden Administration basically ceded to Iran the Red Sea shipping lanes. Trump is now hitting the rebels HARD and will re establish control of the Red Sea. Basically, 75% of the shipping traffic has been going around Africa to avoid the Suez canal - delaying shipments and driving up the cost of goods.

A net positive. Now, what did you say about those trans Tesla terrorists......
Yeah, don't worry, we can totally trust that the administration who accidentally invites journalists to its top-secret military planning chats definitely was very careful to determine that all of those immigrants they roughly deported to El Salvadorean prison were definitely, 100% violent gang members, and no one should question that at all.

Does anyone who is outraged by this faux pas think for one second that the Trump Administration would have engaged in such an action against Yemen's Houthis without getting express approval--in advance, with disclosure of full operational details--from Vlad "the Ras" Putin or someone Vlad had designated. There is no need for OPSEC, when disclosing all the details to Russia in advance for approval is standard protocol. For all I know, this whole thing, including the disclosure to The Atlantic editor, might have been part and parcel of the instructions received from Russia. As such, no consequences for anyone in the Trump administration.

You left out all the efforts Hillary took to cover her tracks, like bleach bit and deleting 30,000 emails and taking hammers to cellphones etc. Was that legal? Has the Trump Administration taken any measures that extreme to try and cover their tracks? What about this golden moment, "Mr. Biden shared information, including some classified information, from these notebooks with his ghostwriter,"...did his head roll? Open borders allowing an estimated 10 to 20 million illegals into the country unvetted with the sole purpose of trying to sway elections...were people fired, or did heads roll? Remember the outrage you expressed over all of those transgressions? Neither does anyone else.

One of the reasons why people voted for Trump is because they were tired of all of this bullshit and tired of the people who defend it out of some stupid ass loyalty to a party while at the same time, jeopardizing themselves and the future of this country. And if you didn't have anything to say about all the crap the Democrats have done but are now acting like this is the end of the world, then I am talking to you.

I hope they do find out what exactly happened and address it appropriately. If not, then the Trump Administration, in this small aspect, will be no different than the Democrats who choose to willingly ignore the monumental failures of their own party. Far more damaging failures than this particular text chain.

Damn! I was one "TDS" away from MAGA bingo.

The standard false equivalency response is total bullshit. Trump has repeatedly shown that he has little interest in the importance of operational security and, with the exception of the Sandy Berger incident, there is no parallel to how Democrats regard it. Nature abhors a vacuum - at some point, this is going to cost us lives and treasure.

These reactions make me think that the only respite is to wait for the oncoming conflagration, whatever form it might take, and watch the GOP flail at managing the consequences. But it took us a decade and a half to clean up the Iraq mess, and five years to clean up the 2008 financial crisis, and the GOP apparently suffered no consequences for their recklessness and carelessness. I worry that the scope of the crisis is going to be horrifying in order for people to understand that this party is incapable of managing our government.

And we need some real institutional leadership if a credible alternative is going to emerge from the chaos. At this point, our institutional political leaders, academics, business leaders and law firms are acting like cowards.
