Fake Christians

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. We have a huge problem in this country with people who go to church every Sunday and declare themselves Christians, yet then Monday thru Saturday are racists, bigots, homophobes and xenophobic. Has this always been such a huge problem and when did it start?

No, this is a 100% new phenomenon. For centuries, Christianity had ensured the absolute morality of those who professed the faith.

I first started noticing it in the 80’s with all the fake tv evangelism. What gets me is the lack of self awareness. Do they not see the hypocrisy in what they are doing?
Without exception, the meanest, most cruel, and most vitriolic people in any community are in a church every Sunday morning. This does not mean that every person in attendance is such, but it is the "hide in plain sight" refuge of every sociopath.

It was a best selling theme back in 1927.

Elmer Gantry is a satirical 1927 novel by Sinclair Lewis that critiques religious hypocrisy in American fundamentalist and evangelistic circles through its protagonist, a charismatic but corrupt and lustful preacher who rises to power by exploiting faith for personal gain. The novel follows Elmer Gantry's journey from a skeptical college student to a successful, manipulative evangelist, exposing the moral rot and commercialism within the church. It was a bestseller but caused public outrage, leading to bans in some cities, and is considered a landmark work

Over 200 hundred years ago ?

Others have higher standards. Judaism isn't particularly looking for converts, as best as I remember.
A friend converted to Judaism in the ‘80’s before she married her fiancé, who was Jewish.

She went to his synagogue, a reformed temple, and met with the rabbi. She said she wanted to convert. The rabbi said, “No.”

She went home. Upset as hell. Her fiancé told her, “I thought about telling you that this would happen. Then, I figured you’d be even more upset. The rabbi is going to tell you no 3 or 4 times. And X number of days (at least a month) have to be between each meeting. Then, you can begin converting.”

Converting was more complicated than saying, “Praise Jesus.”

Yeah, it's been in this country since the beginning of the Christian invasion in the 1600s. Remember, Native American genocide, slavery, Jim Crow, Chinese persecution, Japanese interment, abuse of women, and immigrant torture have all been done in the name of Christ.

Rev. Wright had it right - "God damn America!"

Certainly saw plenty of that growing up in suburban NC. I’m sure a lot of you can relate lol.

These days I honestly don’t have very many religious people in my circles. The small handful that I know that do go to church regularly hardly ever talk about it. Even my parents aren’t nearly as religious as I thought they were when I was younger.

It's always been a problem, but they feel more comfortable saying it out loud since Trump has been president. They lost their minds when Obama was elected twice and really came out of hiding then for Trump.

Judaism does not prize sincerity (I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!) to nearly the degree that (Protestant) Christianity does.
