“Trump administration officials ordered eight senior FBI employees to resign or be fired, and asked for a list of agents and other personnel who worked on investigations into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, people familiar with the matter said, a dramatic escalation of Trump’s plans to shake up U.S. law enforcement.

On Friday, the Justice Department also fired roughly 30 prosecutors at the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington who have worked on cases stemming from Capitol riot, according to people familiar with the move and a Justice Department memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. The prosecutors had initially been hired for short-term roles as the U.S. attorney’s office staffed up for the wave of more than 1,500 cases that arose from the attack by Trump supporters.

Trump appointees at the Justice Department also began assembling a list of FBI agents and analysts who worked on the Jan. 6 cases, some of the people said. Thousands of employees across the country were assigned to the sprawling investigation, which was one of the largest in U.S. history and involved personnel from every state.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove [my note - Bove is one of Trump’s personal lawyers who represented Trump against DOJ and FBI in the Smith cases] gave Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership until noon on Feb. 4 to identify personnel involved in the Jan. 6 investigations and provide details of their roles. Bove said in a memo he would then determine whether other discipline is necessary.

Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll said in a note to employees that he would be on that list, as would acting Deputy Robert Kissane.

“We are going to follow the law, follow FBI policy and do what’s in the best interest of the workforce and the American people—always,” Driscoll wrote.

Across the FBI and on Capitol Hill, the preparation of the list stirred fear and rumors of more firings to come—potentially even a mass purge. …”

Hey Christopher Wray, how does that decision to just resign early under pressure from Trump “for the good of the FBI” look today?

Calling it "shaking up law enforcement" is quite the euphemism for "getting retribution against those he deems his enemies".

I had the same thought but as bad as it is, this is just the first step. The replacements will likely be an American version of the gestapo.
This is absolutely what's coming. Within 1-2 years, nearly every one of us will have some arena of our daily lives that we know perceived anti-government speech is too dangerous to utter. Callayeahs, the country over, will report on their neighbors.

Trump is so eat-up with his warped and sick personality issue, that he can't see that he's making a mistake being so gun-ho to do this before Patel is confirmed. Will be interesting if this gives some GOP senators some second thoughts by Monday.

Hey John Roberts, aren't you glad you gave him immunity? I mean, we wouldn't have wanted a cycle of endless retribution or anything like that.

I still can't believe they did that. It's mind-boggling. The credulity and corruption is just shocking.
I wonder at your statement, “I still can’t believe they did that.”

It’s easy to believe that politicians such as Roberts have done as they’ve done. It’s predictable.

I easily could be remembering incorrectly.

Years ago I remember you asserting that Roberts and SCOTUS (aside from Alito and Thomas) would never be as political as people such as myself said they’d be.

I know a tiny fraction about SCOTUS and/or the federal courts that you know.

I wasn’t talking about SCOTUS or the federal courts. I was talking about political activists such as Roberts and Alito and Thomas, etc.

“I still can’t believe they did that.”

I can. It’s not just believable. It was predictable.

1. Roberts worked really hard to build a legacy that he has now completely trashed. I didn't see that coming. I don't know why he would do that.
2. I wouldn't have said never. I would have said unlikely, and the comparison would have been as you say -- comparing with the most cynical view. I was under no illusions that they would be merely bad. They were going to be terrible and it was obvious all along. But there's still a gap between "as bad as I can imagine" and "worse than I can imagine."
3. In fairness to me, Roberts did put up some resistance to Trump during Trump's first term. He gave all the appearances of wanting to be the adult in the room. A right-wing activist adult, but adult nonetheless.
4. I am very far from the only person who says "I still can't believe they did that." I think pretty much everyone who's had professional contact with a federal court was shocked by that. It was so absolutely beyond the pale, so devoid of any reasonableness from start to finish -- again, what was the point of John Roberts' legal career if he's just going to wipe it away by letting the Republic fall?

Merrick Garland could have avoided all this shit if he had just moved more quickly as AG.
Doubtful.

Doubt one can “move quickly” against a former President.

Especially with SCOTUS backing the former President.
