Wait, Peter May has a new one? Thanks for the heads up!
I also picked up the first book in the Enzo Files series by May. For whatever reason, I never got around to starting that series. My mom reminded me of it, and I ran into the new Lewis Trilogy book when looking it up.

Just started Ghosts of Hiroshima. It grabbed me from the start.

Just finished Road to Jonestown, which is very detailed but ultimately I still found myself perplexed by the ardor of his followers.

Ok, I knew there was a book recommendation thread.

Not sure how I missed it when I searched book.

I'm looking for a really good general history of the US to read or a really good book on Buddhism. Any suggestions?

Love Murakami. I actually find it hard to read “regular” novels after being immersed in one of his books for a while.
absolutely. murakami is something else. i only started reading his stuff in 2024 and have already cruised through the city and its uncertain walls, hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world, after dark, kafka on the shore, norwegian wood and i just finished 1Q84.

trying not to read them all at once because i'm not sure that any other author has as consistently delighted and fascinated me the way that he does.

For US History I heartily recommend Six Frigates by Ian Toll
Focused on sea power, but since we were an isolated nation contending with superpowers across the sea, it is essentailly a history of the formative years of the United States. It especially transfomed my undertanding of the war of 1812 compeltely.

EDIT: Also, as a bonus, you get to find all about "the shores of Tripoli" in all it's gorious detail. Also the building of the USS Constituion wich I found fascinating. So much goodness.

EDIT: And am eager to hear other folks recommendations in this vein too.
