Apparently there is a movie coming out soon, filmed in Pitt County, about this Civil Rights Trailblazer from Washington, NC.

The older, balding man featured in the first part of this clip is Joel Fleischman - like Terry Sanford, he was a UNC Alum and a son of the Sandhills (Laurinburg for Uncle Terry and Fayetteville for Joel Fleischman).

Fleischman worked in Sanford’s gubernatorial administration. At some point he joined Sanford at Duke.

He ran what became the Sanford Center for Public Policy.

Mostly, what Joel Fleischman did was raise money. He was a brilliant fundraiser for Duke.

In college in the ‘80’s, I worked for a caterer who was CONNECTED to Terry and Margaret Rose Sanford, Frank Kenan, Tom Kenan, Bill and Ida Friday, Chancellor Fordham, Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, the Hanes Family……the job was much easier than waiting tables or tending bar and it paid much better.

One of the best connections was to Joel Fleischman. Why? He hosted a TON of fundraising dinners in his home (which was in Chapel Hill, not Derm). And, he tipped. Well.

Joel also happened to be gay. Openly. Never hindered his career.
