Apparently there is a movie coming out soon, filmed in Pitt County, about this Civil Rights Trailblazer from Washington, NC.

Especially for @mpaer

There are 12 segments on this series (made by that school in derm)...This is segment #1.

The older, balding man featured in the first part of this clip is Joel Fleischman - like Terry Sanford, he was a UNC Alum and a son of the Sandhills (Laurinburg for Uncle Terry and Fayetteville for Joel Fleischman).

Fleischman worked in Sanford’s gubernatorial administration. At some point he joined Sanford at Duke.

He ran what became the Sanford Center for Public Policy.

Mostly, what Joel Fleischman did was raise money. He was a brilliant fundraiser for Duke.

In college in the ‘80’s, I worked for a caterer who was CONNECTED to Terry and Margaret Rose Sanford, Frank Kenan, Tom Kenan, Bill and Ida Friday, Chancellor Fordham, Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, the Hanes Family……the job was much easier than waiting tables or tending bar and it paid much better.

One of the best connections was to Joel Fleischman. Why? He hosted a TON of fundraising dinners in his home (which was in Chapel Hill, not Derm). And, he tipped. Well.

Joel also happened to be gay. Openly. Never hindered his career.

While this documentary is focused on Athens, Georgia figuring prominently in it is the Dexter Romweber and Chris "Crow" Smith band, The Flat Duo Jets, the quintessential Chapel Hill experience.

I was at first suspicious of the link but viewed the entire film (which does not seem to be online anywhere else) a couple of days ago there.

Athens, GA: Inside, Out is a great film about a great time.

"Led by the success of The B-52's and R.E.M., Athens, Georgia, became the most vibrant music scene in the country by the mid-80s. Following several bands from different genres, this film presents Athens as a magical artistic environment where bands are not in competition but coexist in harmony. Live performances of R.E.M.'s "Swan Swan H" and "Dream (All I Have To Do)" at the Lucy Cobb Institute chapel are included. The film also features performances and interviews from The B-52's, Pylon, B-B-Que Killers, Time Toy, Jim Herbert, Flat Duo Jets, Love Tractor, Kilkenny Cats, Squalls, and more."

The Stars of Track and Field Studios — FULL DOCUMENTARY

"This is the feature-length concert DVD/documentary, "The Stars of Track and Field," starring Nick Petersen and several bands in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area during 2009.

A Primary Source recollection of the early 2000s "scene" in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I see a lot of people that I know, and miss, but I had already moved away (left in 2008) though I know the places and did visit them on occasion. I know some of the bands but missed out on most as I was tending bar during their shows at a quieter venue.

If you were in Chapel Hill and hugging "the scene" in the early 2000s this is probably a good period piece for you.

P.S., if Ben Dunlap was a friend or acquaintance, he is featured prominently (he just passed away...as they say, far too young).

"John E. "Frail" Joines was a master tale teller from Wilkes County, N. C., on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains. His hunting tales, stories from World War II, and religious narratives, and the life stories of Frail Joines and his wife Blanche mirror changes that swept away much of the traditional culture of his Appalachian rural community in a single generation and show the character and values with which his family met these circumstances. 'They wanted to know how I got so many scars, when I come out of the Army, and I told them that being a Joines got me the scars. I told them going through the war was just like going to a Sunday-school picnic.'" -Frail Joines

From 1981.

He died soon after this documentary was screened.
