Food in New Orleans

Should have asked this before I actually showed up in New Orleans for a conference, but I need some food advice. I’m in a hotel on Canal Street a couple of blocks from Bourbon. Really need suggestions walking distance as I’m apt to be with pretty decent sized groups of work colleagues, and I don’t want to deal with a flotilla of Ubers.

For oysters, po boys, creole and the like:

Felix's
Luke
Gallier's
Drago's

Not sure how big of a group you are looking to have seated....

My favorite casual/lunch type spot in the whole world is Cochon Butcher. Worked in NOLA twice on a couple movies and went there multiple times a week.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been but Sylvain is a good, nice but casual spot that won’t break your bank.

I always get a muffaletta and gumbo at the Napoleon House. I think Central Grocery was closed when I was last there.

Don't bother with Pascal Manale. It was the originator of the barbecue shrimp that many others have improved upon. Big disappointment.

Dooky Chase Restaurant was interesting from a historical perspective; site of the birth of the civil rights movement in NO, but the food was nothing special

A buddy used to cook down there and he worked with Susan Spicer and thinks highly of her. I've read that the female chef character in "Tremme" was based on Susan.

Beignets and cafe au lait for breakfast at Cafe Du Monde, though my buddy likes other local place as well. Eat them somewhere, 'cause it's a NO thing

I'm not familiar enough with the geography to know how these are located in relation to your hotel but maybe it'll give you some ideas. It's similar to Charleston in that there's tons of good restaurants.

Ride the street cars instead of uber, btw...

laisse passer le bon temps!

I ate at both Cochon and Cochon Butcher when I was there and highly recommend both.

If I recall correctly, the duck breast at Emeril’s was quite good. I was very inebriated and spent a significant chunk of time in the bathroom convincing myself not to throw up (was there for a conference).

I’ve got a reservation for 10 at Cochon tomorrow night. And I’m planning on doing Cochon Butcher for lunch.

I don't have any specific recommendations but I do know New Orleans has some of the best food in the country. If I lived there, I'd be 400 pounds ... but I'd be happy almost every mealtime. As I local once said while giving cooking tips to me in a small blue-collar bar, "It's all in the roux."

Ate lunch at Cochon Butcher twice on my last trip - try the Cubano or the Buckboard Bacon sandwich.

I ate Cochon Butcher for lunch. Moroccan Spiced Lamb with Brussels sprouts. Excellent.

Cochon for dinner. A variety of appetizers, including smoked oysters and cracklings. Cochon for my entree, and pineapple upside down cake for dessert. Excellent.

I feel I’m ruined for the rest of my trip. I’ll be getting Cochon Butcher for lunch again.

Ask the staff at Cochon Butcher where THEY eat.

I did Commanders Palace for lunch and it was awesome. If I go back will definitely try Jaque Imo's.
