George Karl- Hoops for Harris

Yes he would !

I had the opportunity to visit Coach Smith in his office back in 2006. We had a 30 minute conversation that touched on golf, religion, and politics. Not a second was spent talking about basketball.

He was a great coach but he was a far greater man.
Yep and coach Smith would be mortified by Donald Trump and the MAGA movement.

My wife was 1 or 2 years behind George Karl at Penn Hills High School. With the caveat that the then enrollment at Penn Hills HS was larger than the population of the town I grew up in, she said that while she didn't really know George Karl, she knew of him and what limited interactions she had with him, he was a pretty nice person. For what that is worth.

The semester of the 1982 NCAA Championship my GF at the time was taking a Feature Writing course in J-School. The syllabus said that late in the semester that they were going to have a mock press conference with someone of note on campus. A week before that date the instructor told the class that the guest was going to be Coach Smith but there was a caveat. He would answer no questions about basketball.

The students had to dig around to find out what other things Coach Smith was interested in...it was good research. This was before he and John Kilgo published A Coach's Life, which is a gem of a life manual, where Coach pours forth his philosophy and his political ideology.

In that same vein, here is a link to a 1987 visit that Coach Smith made to a WXYC Sports Talk Show:

Possibly not the best Dean Smith interview ever (though probably the best Dean Smith interview on Soundcloud) and definitely not the best Bob White nor Jeff Robins interview ever (though probably their best collaborative effort).

Find out why Dean Smith likes The Four Freshmen: www.facebook.com/pages/The-Four-F…hmen/41219628461 better than the Fab Five even though the former were eclipsed by the Beach Boys. Find out why Dean Smith wouldn't let the Four Freshmen talk to the media. Find out why Dean Smith thinks the Four Freshmen should play in a league of their own and be able to go home to their parents on holidays rather than watch game film. Find out why Dean Smith thinks the meanies at the NCAA trimmed basketball scholarships from 15 to 13 as part of a conspiracy to derail his effort to give free tuition to mediocre players who are great hollerers at practice. And, in case you were wondering how Dean Smith really feels about those members of the coaching fraternity who just have to tell the world how much they truly enjoy using anti-perspirant, well, maybe after listening to this you'll need not wonder anymore.
