Welp. Elon was working illegally in the US on a J-1 Visa. J-1 is a student Visa that would allow an assistantship or fellowship at a university, but does not permit working for a company in the US. Εven a post-doctoral position requires an H-1B Visa. Musk lied and he did not "transfer" or have an H-1B at the time. You can't make this sh*t up.

To transfer a J-1 to an H-1B Visa requires the applicant to RETURN to their home country, visit the American consulate (so we know Musk was lying), fill out a slew of forms, fork over quite a bit of $. I actually paid an H-1B Visa set of fees (thousands of $) out of grant and other sources to bring over a research scientist on an H1-B.

I guess Trump will have to DEPORT Elon Musk on Day 1 of Trump 2.0.
