U.S. Will ‘Aggressively’ Revoke Visas of Chinese Students, Rubio Says

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the students who will have their visas canceled include people with ties to the Chinese Communist Party and those studying in “critical fields.”

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Wednesday evening that the Trump administration would work to “aggressively revoke” visas of Chinese students, including those with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or who are studying in “critical fields.”

He added that the State Department was revising visa criteria to “enhance scrutiny” of all future applications from China, including Hong Kong.

The move was certain to send ripples of anxiety across university campuses in the United States and was likely to lead to reprisal from China, the country of origin for the second-largest group of international students in the United States.…”

“… A report published last year by the State Department and the Institute of International Education, a nonprofit group, said that China had the second-largest share of the more than 1.1 million international students who enrolled in American higher education institutions in the 2023-24 term. More than 277,000 students came from China, behind India, with its more than 331,000 students. The number of Chinese students had dropped 4 percent from the previous academic year, while the number from India had surged by 23 percent.…”

My son is a math and computer science major. He said 90% of his fellow students in math were from India or China.

Actual Indian/Chinese citizens or Americans from Indian and Chinese backgrounds? The latter is easy to believe, the first would be a surprise, at least for undergrads.

Yeah, I'm incredibly skeptical of that number. No offense to CR or his son, but that number strikes me as some combination of:

1. Exaggeration
2. Confusion of foreign nationals and domestic minorities
3. Maybe there's some qualifier that didn't make it through the game of telephone.

My son is studying computer engineering and it's nowhere near 90% foreign. Even counting Asian-Americans, it's probably less than half. I saw the photo of his rocket-building team after they hotfired their engine in the desert -- it was pretty mottled. Plenty of white to go with the darker hues.

He may have been exaggerating or I might be mis-remembering...this was back when he thought he was on the math PhD track.

1) It was graduate level classes in math.
2) Believe he said that most of the Chinese were straight from China, but included some Asian Americans.
3) The Indians were half and half.

He said that in Comp Sci things were way different.

All right. I can't speak to math. A long time ago I was taking a German class in grad school and the math phDs were taking it also for requirements, and most of them were white. A lot of Europeans (mostly Eastern). But that was one class 30 years ago. I've no visibility since

“… It was not immediately clear whether the students whose visas were revoked because of alleged law violations had been convicted of any crimes. The State Department told Fox News that students whose visas were revoked because of assault, for example, “either faced arrest or charges” over the allegations.

The administration has enhanced screening for student visa applications, among measures narrowing pathways to entry into the United States.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced in April that applicants for visa categories including aspiring international students would have their social media screened for antisemitic content, raising concerns among immigration law and free-speech experts that the government could refuse applications on the grounds of political speech it dislikes, particularly relating to Israel and the war in Gaza. In June, the State Department additionally said student visa applicants must make their social media profiles public.

Prospective students from more than a dozen countries were banned from applying to study in the U.S. as part of a sweeping travel ban announced in June.

International students have faced the threat of detention or deportation over activities including contributing to an opinion piece in a university newspaper and writing social media posts, which The Washington Post reported has caused some current and prospective students to rethink their plans.
