So this Andes hantavirus is transmitting person to person. It is endemic in fairly remote Andes but has emerged via adventure travel.

Sucks that the USA has withdrawn from WHO …

What kind of potential does this have to became a pandemic? I read that it has a fatality rate between 30-40%? That would make COVID look like child's play.

there are 150 passengers aboard that ship plus however many crew all with potential exposure. and i believe that authorities aren't sure where it originated in the first place, so there could be other exposures we don't know about.

hopefully it can be contained.

eta: the new case in switzerland is a guy who was on board the HV mondius before this current group. they're gonna need to track down everyone who has been anywhere near that ship lately.

It doesn’t spread nearly as easily as COVID, so that should help containment efforts now that it has been identified. But it does spread more easily (with more casual contact) than first assumed.

3 passengers evacuated from hantavirus-hit cruise ship as new case is confirmed in Switzerland

Authorities confirmed that the Andes strain, which can be spread among people, was identified in passengers. Meanwhile, a local leader opposed allowing the ship to dock in Spain.

so at least 150 potential vectors have been running around for weeks.
