Hegseth claims Biden IRS targeted him for audit

"...Hegseth did not offer any evidence that the alleged IRS scrutiny of his taxes was politically motivated.

He earned nearly $6 million in the two years before becoming defense secretary as a Fox News host, and through speaking fees and book deals, according to his financial disclosure form.

Tax experts who have served in Republican and Democratic administrations said audit decisions are made not by political appointees at the IRS but by career employees.

... The tax code makes it a crime for White House officials to request an audit of a particular taxpayer or interfere with an ongoing audit, experts noted.

... The image posted does not show a date. In general, experts said, the taxpayer is notified in advance that an audit is being conducted. Depending on the complexity of the individual’s finances, it could take months to select a return for an audit, experts said. ..."

If Hegseth got a correspondence audit, that would usually be a 4-8 week matter. If it were an in-person audit, that would take a minimum of 3 months (and probably more like 5-7 months, or forever if your taxes are as complicated as, say, DJT).

Of course I guess another headline is that among other things, the SecDef who made $6 million the last two years didn't pay a sufficient amount of taxes, though the amount shown ($33,558), while not nothing, suggests some deduction or calculation error rather than nefarious tax dodging for that amount of income.

Obviously the date is an important factor, but what evidence should we expect to show it was "politically motivated"? If it was politically motivated, and there are multiple people involved, the odds of there being a paper trail are slim, right? Those involved aren't going to send emails discussing their plans.

The detailed audits of Comey and McCabe were investigated and determined to be a very strange coincidence but nothing more, so as you suggest it is unlikely that any case has some paper trail of nefarious plotting against enemies of the Administration.

The date is relevant as to whether anyone knew Hegseth was going to be nominated as SecDef when the audit commenced --that nomination stunned everyone, including Trump advisors, so no way that was anticipated prior to the election or really more than a few days before it was announced. So if the audit commenced in October or early November, it really couldn't be attributed to Hegseth's status of SecDef nominee.

I agree it was probably an error, but I’m going to call everything nefarious as we hear incessantly from the MAGAs.
Like, for example, Pete saying the audit was politically motivated.

Hillary Clinton: “The only years that anybody's ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn't pay any federal income tax.”

Donald Trump: “That makes me smart.”

That's Donald's boy! The IRS is targeting is targeting him for being smart. This is MAGA.
