This is true, but I live in the western portion of Burke county and we got hit hard. Lake James and the headwaters of the Catawba River was no joke four days ago.

this^^^
Yep. Lake James was at its highest level ever, and as I said in my post on the weather thread, $hit rolls downhill, and that part of Burke was next up on that side of the lake.
WBT has a lot of right leaning radio hosts.
That they do.
Wait, I thought the Feds were actively keeping civilians from helping?
My sarcasm meter is telling me this poast is is exactly that, but if I missed it completely, I can confirm without a doubt that civilians are helping, and helping in droves.

We're getting crushed by political liars. Outside if the basic infrastructure (bad roads, trees, power) which is an out of this world problem, one of the most significant secondary issues that folks trying to help are running into is this straight up, bold face lying by people that need to either get up here and help or STFU about something they know nothing about.

I usually listen to it for the lolz to be honest. And a bit of nostalgia. Reminds me of a much easier time in my life, but gave up buying what he’s selling about 15 years ago.
But he’s so specific with the nUmber I’m wondering what the nugget of truth is. My assumption is this is a twisted fact.
I get what you're saying about the nostalgia part, but I think the emotional connection is the crux of the problem.

In order to manipulate you they are going to use every tool at their disposal. Outright truths (A Haitian immigrant caused a schoolbus accident that resulted in the death of a child), half truths (FEMA does funds do flow to communities affected by influxes of immigrants, but do not take away from disaster relief funding in any way), and outright lies (Haitian Immigrants are eating the pet of Springfield / The immigrants in Springfield are there illegally).

Please realize the truth value of the stories they are telling you do not matter to them in any way whatsoever, the key point is that these are emotional stories designed specifically to keep you in an emotional state where you are easily manipulated.

My sincere recommendation is avoid consuming media that you know is explicitly trying to manipulate you emotionally.

So, had Safelite come repair my windshield (small starburst) this morning due to gravel that spun up and hit us while we were going to Seven Devils on Wednesday. Guy was super nice and professional, and I was telling him how we got the starburst by traveling on patched HWY 105. He proceeds to ask me how we got up there because he heard law enforcement was arresting anyone who tried to bring supplies in.

I explained not only was that not the case, but there were tons of private and commercial vehicles hauling in supplies to that area while we were there, National Guard vehicles in several locations and most stuff on 321 in Boone open now, albeit limited hours etc. (and some mobile stuff in front of the box store). I told him about the many free meals stations etc.

He says well that is probably because Samaratin's Purse is there. He then says that he was told that people were getting arrested trying to bring supplies in north of Boone and that FEMA and the National Guard are forcing private aircraft to turn around and seizing the materials they bring in "supposedly" to protect rescuers on the ground and control the kinds of supplies permitted in. He claimed that the government was preventing thousands of isolated people from being saved by all these patriots and people are getting hot about it. Then asked how I got through Blowing Rock, he heard it had been destroyed.

I told him we didn't drive through downtown, we went 321 around the outside of town, but it appeared to still be intact. They did have a boil water order that just ended. He said he was surprised, but maybe I just didn't see the destruction he assured me had happened.
It doesn't surprise me anymore, but it will never case to disappoint me that so many people from a developed country will believe things like "FEMA is seizing supplies from volunteers who drive in with them." It's hard to imagine anything more transparently BS than this claim. People think FEMA is, like, robbing random volunteers at gunpoint, and confiscating their personal property?

You should take this example as a reason to shut all that kind of garbage off. You are obviously still susceptible to the lying and to be fair the human brain is wired in such a way that consistent messaging of the type you get from folks like Beck is going to leave an impression. You may think you are just listening to it for nostalgia, but it's affecting how you think.

The comments from GOP congressmen are particularly disingenuous. They specifically required those funds be spent on migrant housing needs.
Their actual votes on things don't matter. See: voting against the infrastructure bill but take credit when the spoils of that bill benefit your district. They simply have no shame.

Glenn Beck said this am that FEMA gave 1.4 billion to illegals. No idea where he got this information, and I’m not saying it’s true.

If (big if) this is true it does suck. That can build 3500 400,000 homes Maybe just a drop in the bucket, but it’s been said on this board that the max you’ll get is 80,000 from fema. That’s not going to build a house, and it just sucks to think of those who will not be made whole, while people who aren’t citizens get benefits.
I’m not even going to comment on the other aspects because it’s Glenn Beck and I don’t trust the source, but FEMA is not a substitute for insurance, nor is it intended to be. If the federal government replaced everyone’s home in every disaster it would bankrupt the country. It would also create moral hazard where nobody would bother with insurance.

Eringhousesouth works for safe lite?
It was really disconcerting to see the wild lies we see online spouted off in the real world. Like I said, the guy was super professional at his job and no complaints whatsoever about his demeanor. He seemed genuinely puzzled by what I was telling him I saw with my own eyes two days ago.

I hope he was more competent in repairing the windshield than in his grasp of conditions on the ground.

He seemed like it. Full credit to the guy, he was very professional in his job. And he wasn’t angry or anything passing along what he had heard about all this stuff — I think he basically decided I just had somehow just missed the arrests and private aircraft being forced out of the airspace and supplies being seized and other stuff he had been assured was happening up there.

The response from the right is bordering on unbelievable. I'm in a Carolina Beach FB group, and saw someone parrot that Trump comment about FEMA money being used for immigrants, almost word for word. And the comments on the FEMA and American Red Cross posts...

As for supplies, I don't believe for a second that they are being "taken" or "stolen." However, officials from the beginning have asked people not to load up private vehicles and drive up. At least not now. What they want is money. But people have ignored that and it's adding to the congestion and chaos. I could believe that people are being turned around if they have no definite destination for the cargo.

People don't listen and then get angry. It's like dealing my teenager.

I will say that I agree with someone upthread: the people spouting this nonsense were always voting for Trump, so I don't think it moves the needle a whole lot. I'm now just waiting for the voter plants who say they were planning to vote for Harris, but after this they are firmly on the Trump train. Because that will be believable.

There's always a grift involved somewhere down the line. Whether its the accounts that start the disinfo that want you to follow their channel for anti-vax info, or XYZ conspiracy, or to send money to a gofundme or church instead of legitimate organizations. There's always another purpose built in.

So many "reports" and "people are saying." I'm so tired of the information/disinformation environment in this country due to social media.

"I've been on foodstamps and welfare, did anyone help me out? No."

I remember that one. I was disappointed because I've always enjoyed watching Craig T. Nelson as an actor. But that quote perfectly summarizes the cognitive dissonance of so many people. "I was on welfare but nobody helped me!" Just a total failure to grasp the reality of their situation.
