I really, really hate sXitter.
I understand the sentiment. But It is one of many social media platforms swimming in this stuff.

Edit to add what has been striking to me over the last 72 hours has been watching the “blame the other tribe” sentiment bubble up in various forms that almost all involve (at best) uninformed assumptions about the opposite political side and a lot of which involve outright false claims and lunatic conspiracy theories that distraught people are latching onto. I am sure that brew is being fed by bots and trolls bent on encouraging that kind of division.

Then along comes the actual politicians who try to sharpen and harness that toxic reaction.

“…
The Republican slammed Harris on Sunday for holding fundraisers in California when parts of the nation “have just been devastated by a massive hurricane.”

Trump campaigned in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania over the weekend, along with a stop in Tuscaloosa to watch part of the Georgia-Alabama game from a luxury suite.

The White House said that both Harris and President Joe Biden will visit communities affected by Helene “as soon as it will not disrupt emergency response operations.” …”

To me, this subject should be viewed from two perspectives.

1. It is ludicrous to think that politicians being on the ground in Western NC would help anything. It is even more ludicrous to think that things like foreign aid impact disaster relief.

2. The American public is mostly ludicrous and ignoring that is political malpractice.

The Dems should absolutely pander in this situation. Every Democratic governor in the US should activate their own National Guard Units and send them. Kamala and Walz should be there. Biden should be sending in resources and airlift support from regular military. Is it abusing those positions? Absolutely! It is playing to our most base instincts? For sure. But the shit works. Do it now and don't look back. Send it all. Drop an airlift of water and dry milk on Donald's head wherever he visits.

Yep.

Screw this up and Trump wins

Ummm, is this X handle from an X post NYCFAN shared a self own or what? Because I know that I'd like to throat punch MAGA. And excuse my messy highlighting - we all can't be as precise as NYCFAN.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment but Biden could teleport the entire population of WNC to Aruba for a six month vacation and it wouldn’t make a difference in the right wing infosphere. It takes two seconds of googling to see images and videos of all the National Guard helicopters and humvees that are already hard at work in the hardest hit areas, and yet right wing Twitter makes it sound like the government is sitting on its hands. I think Biden and Cooper just need to keep working as hard as they possibly can to help people in need. Playing the optics game is a fools errand in a world where half of America already thinks we’re circling the toilet.

Asheville, Kings Mountain, they're both in North Carolina. Why argue over 100 miles.

NC Dem party should be organizing convoys of supplies to Western NC towns. Well those you can drive to at least.

I remember the news stories of the Trump branded trucks bringing in food and water to Lumberton.

Oh, no doubt. I'm a fierce opponent of all social media but I think sXitter is the worst of the worst since Elon took over.

I have no idea which combination of agencies deserve, or will get, the credit, but everyone here can see the task is enormous and the response, at least in terms of restoring utilities, is moving at ludicrous speed, under the circumstances. Line workers are absolutely crushing it today.

I’m extremely glad to hear that, and I can assure you those of us in the less impacted parts of the state are doing what we can with donations, etc. to try to get help there as quickly as possible. There’s tons of help on the way, and everyone has your communities on our minds. I can’t stand when natural disasters become political. Hated it with Katrina and I hate it here as well. It’s about supporting the victims and the helpers as much and as quickly as possible. The post mortems can wait, if they’re really necessary at all.

To the Dem leaning areas. Let the MAGAs find out what it's like to have selective disaster relief.

Not to make light of this horrific disaster, but there are going to be a whole lot of people who "don't believe in socialism" who are going to need a whole hell of a lot of socialism in the coming days, weeks, months, and perhaps years. And I sincerely hope that they get every single bit of it that they need- because I believe that is a primary role of government.

I mean this is the BS that gets spouted ... have seen this woman's post shared twice. Blaming Cooper because there was warning (it wasnt 5 days...and the storm went further east than projected). The Hell was Cooper to do before the storm? I bet those folks werent going to evacuate. It's like blaming a politician for a tornado hitting

So he should have staged help there ahead of time so it could have all been obliterated by the storm and water too? Brilliant.....

EXACTLY

"Hey Cooper, you didn't know the all time record for storm event rain would happen!"

Yes, I re-posted a tweet from Jeff Jackson to a fb group for Avery county on Saturday to let them know that this situation had gotten people's attention in Washington. He tweeted, "A full state and federal response is underway. You are the mission. " One of the comments to the post was "Where is Cooper? Where is our President?" This was less than 24 hours after the event. Like what, Biden is supposed to fly down with his magic carpet, hand out generators and fix the roads himself? It is crazy. And if Cooper or Biden HAD arrived on the scene immediately, they would have been lambasted for taking up resources or using it as a political stunt. Politics just sucks.

ETA I think unfortunately that this event has much more of a chance to hurt Harris than help, unfortunately.

In case you don’t get them, here’s the full text of an email Jeff sent out an hour or so ago. Feel free to share if you think it would help.

Western North Carolina was just smashed by a 1-in-500 year flood.

It ravaged a part of our state that is 300 miles from the coastline and 2,000 feet above sea level. This is an extreme outlier event for our mountain towns, and the shock is equal to the devastation.

A lot of people are stuck, and some are running low on supplies.

If that’s you, I want you to know what is happening right now to get you what you need.

There is a massive mobilization underway led by the Governor. The National Guard is on the ground with hundreds of guardsmen, aircraft, and highwater vehicles. They’ve done over 100 rescues and have brought in over 30,000 pounds of food, water, and medicine.

We’ve got heavy-lift aircraft from seven states running those missions. The Asheville airport has re-opened, but not for commercial traffic, only for relief supplies.

There are dozens of search and rescue teams from across the country on the ground. We’ve got about 700 people focused on search and rescue handling the most urgent situations.

Water is a top priority for the region. The damage to treatment plants was severe. We’re talking more than repair - some of them are going to require rebuilding. We will be bringing water into the region for an extended period of time.

Thousands of linemen from across the country (and Canada) have arrived to get the electricity back on. Two days ago, there were a million people without electricity. Now it’s about 400,000 - but a lot of substations flooded and the water has to recede before repairs can be done. Some of those substations will need to be substantially rebuilt.

All hospitals are open, but some are on backup power. Getting all hospitals back on grid power is a major priority.

More than 1,600 people from NCDOT are working to re-open critical roads. They are focused on gaining access to communities that have been cut off so we can get people out and food and water in.

Emergency mobile cell towers are on the way to ten western counties. Their locations will be announced once they are in place. Cell phone carriers have also activated “disaster roaming” so that any phone on any carrier can access any network to place calls.

Governor Cooper’s request for a major disaster declaration has been approved. That means if your home was damaged or destroyed in a disaster area you can apply online right now for help from the Individual Assistance program.

If you’re reading this from somewhere other than Western North Carolina and can help, you can support at nc.gov/donate. That effort is being managed by United Way.

As for Congress, one of our primary roles is to make sure the FEMA Disaster Relief Fund can cover the costs of the emergency response. However, the latest effort to replenish the fund failed due to opposition from the right-flank. So fixing that is going to be the first order of business when we return.

Just to be very clear:

For folks who are reading this and are currently cut off and waiting to see some help, please know that you are the primary mission. An enormous effort is underway to get to you. You are the top priority for thousands of people and help is coming. Stick together. Good people are moving toward you and they won’t stop until you are safe.

- Rep. Jeff Jackson
