As far as I can tell, MAGA who can’t deny the evidence of their eyes and ears of chopper traffic in the region just turn to the next conspiracy, that FEMA and the FAA are preventing private aircraft from using the airspace in ravaged areas to save people (usually so the private actors can’t see and report back the nefarious things the government is up to on the ground). That conspiracy probably has a nugget of truth in that there is so much air traffic in some of these areas the FAA has had to issue flight restrictions for safety reasons, but you know it is so you cants we the FEMA camps rounding up MAGA to replace them with lizard people or migrants or U.N. Mining interests or something.
Why cant we hold people responsible legally for outright lies in this country? Does it fall under freedom of speech?

A lot of people need to heed this passage from the article:

There is another opposite danger, though — that of people instinctually rejecting everything the “experts” say in favor of the skeptics. In effect, they are making the skeptics their new experts. This is often worse than relying on the former group, since at least the old experts have a proven sphere of expertise and are held accountable to a much higher degree than anonymous social media accounts.

This is the classic mistake of those "doing their own research" (i.e. hunting out obscure or fringe opinions that confirm what they already want to believe).
I think we’re clearly at a place where 35% or more of the public have dismissed actual expertise as a negative and largely pursue “alternative experts” as those they listen to.

It is a significant issue for our country beyond politics, although that is where it currently shows up the most.

While I fully agree with the tone and tenor of this thread, and I do believe that disinformation is materially hampering recovery--

My reading of this thread, combined with abnormally limited exposure to normal news the last 9 days, led me to wrongly assume the $750 relief thing was conjured from thin air. As in, a Trump lie to damn with small numbers.

I was surprised just now when my wife told me it's a real thing and showed me the website.

So to anyone in WNC who's as far behind the curve as me: I doubt that there's anyone on this board who personally needs the $750, but all of us have neighbors who need it, so don't leave it on the table.

Definitely take the $750 if you need it. I think everyone here shares that view. The issue has always been Trump saying that’s the ONLY monetary relief disaster victims will be receiving, and that’s just not true. There’s tons more available later.

Just to be clear

Just to be clear, I meant I'm way behind the curve in terms of news and information. Did not mean to imply that I'm in any personal or financial distress. Will definitely take the $750 and give it to someone to whom it'll matter.
