Dang, he absolutely nailed it in terms of summarizing the facts on the ground. The 1M to 400k without power this fast is staggering under the circumstances; power lines and poles were laying on the ground all over the place across like a dozen + counties 2 days ago. They still are in my neighborhood, unfortunately. But now, looking forward to hopefully having power, running water, flush toilet in maybe a couple or 3 days instead of weeks.
In case you don’t get them, here’s the full text of an email Jeff sent out an hour or so ago. Feel free to share if you think it would help.

Western North Carolina was just smashed by a 1-in-500 year flood.

It ravaged a part of our state that is 300 miles from the coastline and 2,000 feet above sea level. This is an extreme outlier event for our mountain towns, and the shock is equal to the devastation.

A lot of people are stuck, and some are running low on supplies.

If that’s you, I want you to know what is happening right now to get you what you need.

There is a massive mobilization underway led by the Governor. The National Guard is on the ground with hundreds of guardsmen, aircraft, and highwater vehicles. They’ve done over 100 rescues and have brought in over 30,000 pounds of food, water, and medicine.

We’ve got heavy-lift aircraft from seven states running those missions. The Asheville airport has re-opened, but not for commercial traffic, only for relief supplies.

There are dozens of search and rescue teams from across the country on the ground. We’ve got about 700 people focused on search and rescue handling the most urgent situations.

Water is a top priority for the region. The damage to treatment plants was severe. We’re talking more than repair - some of them are going to require rebuilding. We will be bringing water into the region for an extended period of time.

Thousands of linemen from across the country (and Canada) have arrived to get the electricity back on. Two days ago, there were a million people without electricity. Now it’s about 400,000 - but a lot of substations flooded and the water has to recede before repairs can be done. Some of those substations will need to be substantially rebuilt.

All hospitals are open, but some are on backup power. Getting all hospitals back on grid power is a major priority.

More than 1,600 people from NCDOT are working to re-open critical roads. They are focused on gaining access to communities that have been cut off so we can get people out and food and water in.

Emergency mobile cell towers are on the way to ten western counties. Their locations will be announced once they are in place. Cell phone carriers have also activated “disaster roaming” so that any phone on any carrier can access any network to place calls.

Governor Cooper’s request for a major disaster declaration has been approved. That means if your home was damaged or destroyed in a disaster area you can apply online right now for help from the Individual Assistance program.

If you’re reading this from somewhere other than Western North Carolina and can help, you can support at nc.gov/donate. That effort is being managed by United Way.

As for Congress, one of our primary roles is to make sure the FEMA Disaster Relief Fund can cover the costs of the emergency response. However, the latest effort to replenish the fund failed due to opposition from the right-flank. So fixing that is going to be the first order of business when we return.

Just to be very clear:

For folks who are reading this and are currently cut off and waiting to see some help, please know that you are the primary mission. An enormous effort is underway to get to you. You are the top priority for thousands of people and help is coming. Stick together. Good people are moving toward you and they won’t stop until you are safe.

That would make an enormous difference, I know. Hoping it happens even faster than that.

Politics surrounding disasters sucks so much. For 3 years of my time as an Army Reservist I worked in National Security, to include disaster response. No matter how much effort and planning goes into being prepared for disasters, the really bad ones always look like a clusterfuck because there just is no way to make it suck less in the moment. We’ve sent the national guards of a dozen states and disaster response teams from 19 states to help out, but when there are no functional roads and there’s hundreds of tiny mountain towns, it is impossible to get to everyone in the first few days. Impossible, but that won’t stop people from complaining that Kamala and Joe didn’t personally come rolling up in a humvee or on the mule train to personally chainsaw the trees on their house, turn on their power, and cook them a meal.

Yes, I re-posted a tweet from Jeff Jackson to a fb group for Avery county on Saturday to let them know that this situation had gotten people's attention in Washington. He tweeted, "A full state and federal response is underway. You are the mission. " One of the comments to the post was "Where is Cooper? Where is our President?" This was less than 24 hours after the event. Like what, Biden is supposed to fly down with his magic carpet, hand out generators and fix the roads himself? It is crazy. And if Cooper or Biden HAD arrived on the scene immediately, they would have been lambasted for taking up resources or using it as a political stunt. Politics just sucks.

ETA I think unfortunately that this event has much more of a chance to hurt Harris than help, unfortunately.
We will start to see more images of recovery and that is beneficial. Right now, the images are the destruction. The images of food and water delivery, etc etc etc etc - those are the ones that are good and can help her. The anti-Cooper messages will be there because they are red areas and cult will cult.

I’m extremely glad to hear that, and I can assure you those of us in the less impacted parts of the state are doing what we can with donations, etc. to try to get help there as quickly as possible. There’s tons of help on the way, and everyone has your communities on our minds. I can’t stand when natural disasters become political. Hated it with Katrina and I hate it here as well. It’s about supporting the victims and the helpers as much and as quickly as possible. The post mortems can wait, if they’re really necessary at all.
Hickory Airport is one of the staging areas for assistance because it is close enough to the most affected areas that they are flying + packing trucks and driving supplies from the airport to places within WNC where they can be distributed. They had to ask this morning that folks stop bringing supplies because they are getting so many donations that they cannot physically move all the supplies via plane or trucks. They're now going to the Hickory Racetrack where they can be stored temporarily before they'll be transported into the affected areas.

It's been amazing to see how the community has responded to the needs of those affected by Helene.

Best people in the world. Wilmington and Greenville get clobbered, WNC will step up. The mountains get clobbered, ENC will step up. I’m a SC native but the Old North State is 100% home now, and almost certainly will always be.

As someone who lives in Western North Carolina, and who is actually living and trying to survive this event, I really take Umbrage for anybody trying to politicize this event. I’ve just now gotten cell service that allows access to the Internet… After 4 days. Still no power, no water up until yesterday, having to drive 30 miles one way to get gas and freshwater to drink.

For anyone trying to make political points off of this biblical Event should be hog-tied, horse-whipped, and tarred and feathered.

In which county are you?

Wrong. It is necessary now, more than ever, for people in NC to understand who does, and who doesn't, have their backs. Trump did nothing about Isais for months. Let's see what Biden does for the people of NC.

NC Dem party should be organizing convoys of supplies to Western NC towns. Well those you can drive to at least.

I remember the news stories of the Trump branded trucks bringing in food and water to Lumberton.
Get with it Dems. THIS is the election.
