May have missed this in the thread already, but there was an IV Fluid-producing plant that was damaged during the storm. My wife told me this morning that Duke hospital currently only has a 6 day supply left and are currently in the process of making their own. This plant is the only one that supplies IV fluid to the hospital.

I went looking for some NASA data specifically related to Helene for work yesterday, and in a supreme twist of irony, NOAAs National Center For Environmental Information is offline because the data center is located in Asheville.

The Access Data button on National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) gives you

Baxter International in Marion, NC (35 miles east of Asheville) temporarily has closed as a result of Hurricane Helene.

It produced 60% of the US’s IV fluids for health facilities. They also produce peritoneal dialysis solutions for dialysis centers.

It’s a nationwide shortage.

Corporate consolidation is a threat to our lives and national security.

I know these right-wing lunatics are full of it with their claims of human engineered weather events. But darn! In one way I sort of wish that human technology in general and US technology in particular was that advanced. If the US had to power to create and direct hurricanes with the sort of precision that BSC right-wingers think, then I am definitely voting for the Democrats, the folks pulling the strings on that enormous leap forward in knowledge. It'd be just like the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band song, "Turn of the Century."

There'll be flying boats, and condos with moats;
Cultivated oceans, floating cities in the sky.
Living underneath a bubble;
No more toil and trouble
Singin' 'bout that sweet ole by and by.

We'll all have lots of money
That we won't have to spend;
You'll be given everything
When everyone's your friend
Hanging out together
In picture perfect weather -
This time 'round the party never ends.

Hallelujah, I can't wait to see it
Hallelujah, come on and go with me
Let me show you the way it's gonna be
At the turn,
The turn of the century.

We won't need no tv preachers
To ask how much we gave
We won't need no tv preachers,
See, by then, we'll all be saved
No more fighting for a country
No child will go hungry
We'll be smiling from the cradle to the grave.

Hallelujah, I can't wait to see it
Hallelujah, come on and go with me
Let me show you the way it's gonna be
At the turn,
The turn of the century.

we are so screwed.

the internet was a mistake.

Right. And in the coming years, when AI becomes indistinguishable from reality and climate change starts to significantly affect millions of people around the world.... yikes. I'm no prepper, but I'm not exactly feeling optimistic about the future.

I bet Al Gore is kinda thinking "I told you so" these days. I think a lot about the counterfactual, if those hanging chads had gotten appropriately resolved and GWB had never been elected...

Nothing wrong with the internet. This is user error.
Well, at its source is user intent rather than user error -- disinformation like this is entirely intentional by the purveyors like Alex Jones who are monetizing their alternate reality and foreign enemies who are creating and amplifying disinformation to undermine democratic governments.

It's a little harder to parse out intent versus ignorance as the disinformation is consumed and spread.

Not to derail this thread, but for another discussion another time perhaps, I've always thought that had Gore won that election that there is a reasonable chance that 9/11 happened anyway and I think that the GOP response then would not have been rally around the flag but IMPEACH GORE!!!!!

Don't blame the chads. That didn't help. but the real damage was the hugely flawed voter purge conducted that summer that disenfranchised thousands.

Remind me how controlling the weather would benefit Democrats? Why would creating diasters help the left's cause? Gives conspiracy theorist a chance to unleash an avalanche of BS onto unsuspecting MAGAs.

The surge of misinformation we are experiencing as a society is less a failure of the internet itself than it is a failure to regulate the internet.

It’s a great microcosm to examine. When the internet first came out, people thought it would be liberating. For a while, it was. In the era where there were thousands and thousands of small websites, forums, chat rooms, etc., the flow of information was democratized in a way.

The rise of mass social media and Web 2.0 has exposed what happens when you don’t control private profit impulses. The same companies dominate advertising and an increasing number of people get their news exclusively from social media.

We see the dangers of having these massive pillars of our current society under private control. Look at Twitter. This lesson can be applied far beyond the internet.

Like mostly everything it went downhill starting in 2010 with the rise of Facebook and Twitter.
