I've been trying to get in touch with a buddy on Lake James. He's up high so I imagine his place is okay. I would have thought cell service would be working. He's near the marina and campground.

I heard an anecdote today from Avery County where people were irritated that FEMA had not arrived on the scene, then when FEMA arrived, folks were irritated that they tried to take charge. Other people have falsely said that the National Guard wasn’t there, when literally there is a picture on the NG’s twitter account of the NG handing out supplies in the area.

This is a DEEPLY red county. Don't tread on me flags flying everywhere. You can’t win against confirmation bias.

I've seen a steady stream of National Guard helicopters flying overhead day and night. Not to mention ones from the Marines, including Chinooks, Blackhawks (I don't know which specifically uses these, so excuse my ignorance) but have been following them on flightradar apps.

The Marines don't use Chinooks or Blackhawks, but your point still stands. Not to mention all of the rescue teams from different parts of the state and from other states (18 states at last count) are being funded by federal dollars. The government has been all over this event from the start.
