The Dean Smith mention to me is interesting. After four seasons, Dean had a .500 season and a losing season. It would be season six before Dean's team distinguished themselves with three straight trips to the Final Four. Dean was 0-6 in the FF before he won a title. it was much easier than to make a FF as there were fewer teams that danced and much less talent (it is true had to win the ACC to get in the dance, at least until mid-1970s I think it was).
I keep saying WWDD. What would Dean Do? Dean Smith is probably rolling in his grave at the thought that there is such an effort to oust Hubert.
People talk about inconsistency. Dean and Roy had plenty of headscratchers in their day. They are also among, IMO, the top give coaches of all times, not just for winning, but for other traits, including integrity, many of which they handed off to Hurbert.
If Dean arose tomorrow, or Roy took a successful dip into the Fountain of Youth, and either said, "Hubert, you gotta go, I want to coach," I would say, "thanks Hubert, see ya."
Not happening.
What might happen, however, is that we lose as a 1.5 fav on the road tonight to a pretty good Miami team. And if that happens, we all know what happens next. Hubert is given no margin for error. None.
Again, Dean was 0-6 in FF and it took the GOAT, Worthy and Perkins to fix that.
No. I did not disparage Dean. I think he is the greatest coach and perhaps person of all time. But his teams laid plenty of eggs.
