I understand that Dean prioritized program stability and having patience with coaches. Dean’s point with the 5-6 years thing is that’s how long he felt it took to get fully comfortable and adjusted to running a program, not that he felt that every single coach automatically deserved that much time before they faced any scrutiny. There is a difference. If the latter were true then Doherty would have still been our coach in 2005-2006.

In any case this is a great example of why I think your original post is presumptuous. In Dean’s era, yes, it generally did take some time to methodically build up a program. This was especially true if you were taking over a program that had bottomed out with administration actively trying to sabotage it like Dean was facing. It’s much easier for a new coach to jump start a program these days for a variety of reasons. We’re talking about a man that is famous for always adapting with the direction that the sport was heading in order to stay successful. If he were alive today we have no idea if he would still have the same 5-6 years stance about a coach’s ramp period.

To be clear, I’m not making this point as a way to advocate for firing Hubert. It’s just a pet peeve when our fans try to use what they assume Dean would think about something to defend their own point. It’s an unnecessary obfuscation.
 
I have never been one of these "Fire the coach, reanimate Dean Smith, and re-hire him" types. Division 1 NCAA Basketball is so different from what I grew up with that I really have no idea who the players are anymore or what the team will look like 12 months from now. But I have to admit, I really enjoy that we--as a group--are no longer showing quite the unhealthy interest in 15- and 16-year-old boys as we previously did.

I mean, with Hubert it can be a year over year thing too where he’s yet to string 2 good seasons together in a row. But we also struggle to stack good performances imo. This year has (for the most part) been better outside the weeks where we played defense like a poorly coached high school team.

Well, OK. Wait until the season is over to assess how well we stacked good performances. It we stack six of them in a row, you know, at the right time, it might impact the decision considerably.
