There is much to like about this team. There is good depth with lots of moving parts. Looking from the outside, they all seem like good guys. The two big post stars are ersatile players who can pass the ball, and seem to enjoy each other, There is lots of evidence of individuals improving, including the possibility that they will stick around for a few years.
I think that the key point is simply that my mood is better because the team is better. But there are two other variables in play:
(1) I STOPPED READING INSIDE CAROLINA
When the big changes happened I just did not resubscribe. And, in truth, I should have cut that cord ages ago, Sure, there have been some positive aspects about IC, but much has been frustrating: The beat reporters have been very weak writers; it has seemed that nobody was in charge of basic editing; game stories were worthless if you saw the game, they merely summarized the box score and offered no analysis of matchups, pace of play etc. I also think that IC became increasingly oriented towards pleasing readers rather than producing quality. Did these people really believe that COVID was a "political" issue? Hubert Davis began his time at UNC stressing defense, and - sure enough - the problems we have faced have commonly been poor defense. Yet, for years IC writers have stressed offense and specifically shooting and scoring, Is that just catering to the paying pubiic?
(2) I REALIZED THAT "GAME THREADS" WERE NOT FOR ME
I have not lived in Chapel Hill for 50 years, and I have not had close friends who followed UNC for most of that time. For decades I depended on IC to discuss the team on line. But it has only recently dawned on me that many folks take some of their sports joy out of second-guessing the coaches. I used to get annoyed at the folks who seemed to thrive on declaring that Roy, and then Hubert, were making mistakes. I thought that was dumb for a host of obvious reasons. But it finally dawned on me that if these folks take pleasure in posting as if they know more than Hubert, then what is the harm in their pleasure? [After all, I feel pretty confident that I know more than pretty much the entire cabinet, not to mention POTUS and the VP.
] So, I concluded, the answer for my happiness was to pretty completely avoid these discussions of coaching decisions And, meanwhile, I opted to avoid these claims that Coach Davis was somehow "on the hot seat."
So, I just watch the games, applying my own sense of "analysis," with little attention to what other UNC fans are saying, Which has been very enjoyable
