I hate to say it, but a large majority of this country aren't mature enough or smart enough to support a multicultural America.
And if we continue to segragate our schools-CHarter etc-the kids will never learn
I have a little buddy in a public school in Garner. As has been the case for many years in Garner this little white girl is in classes that are likely less than 50% "white"
Good for her

It's not a coincidence that the whole private school/"Christian" school movement in the South exploded in the late 60s/1970s right after the civil rights movement successfully integrated public schools in the region. White folks with some money who had no issues with their kids going to the all-white segregated schools suddenly were opening private schools all over the place, then church-affiliated, almost entirely-white "Christian" schools, and now finally the whole Charter/Homeschool/Voucher movement to just take white kids who can afford it (or parents who have the time and money to homeschool) out of increasingly diverse, multicultural public schools entirely.

The reasoning of white conservatives nationally seems to be: if we can't racially segregate public ed and force our beliefs and curriculum into elementary and secondary and higher public ed, then we'll just segregate ourselves from the rest of society, starting with private/charter/homeschooling in kindergarten and going right up to "Christian" private universities like Liberty or Hillsdale or Regent or Grand Canyon U. and so on. So there are now millions of kids whose parents have ensured that they will go all the way through at least high school, if not college, learning only what the parents want them to learn and largely socializing with only whom they want them to socialize with. And that definitely doesn't include learning that America is an increasingly diverse society in so many ways - racially, religiously, politically, culturally, etc. And so here we are with the political party that represents these people - the Republicans - using their control of the government to try and turn back the clock, just as so many conservative parents have done at home and with their own kids.

Quick question to any historians on the board: What would be the best example of a country, in world history, where many different religions, races, cultures, morals, ways of life, beliefs etc.....many of which that oppose each other....have successfully coexisted and actually thrived long term without there be one dominant group that dictated how the country would be run?

I mean a country where there are vast differences but yet, equal power among the different groups. Or is the US the only place in history where this is expected to be a high functioning, peaceful reality over the long term?
