On another thread, there was a discussion of the origin of the phrase JCD. We know a few things: it stands for jump circle defense, it originated with Dookie students who rushed the home court after a loss to prevent other teams from standing on the center jump circle, for some reason. But the details seem hazy in people's minds. Let's see if we can reconstruct it from collective poster memory.

Here's what I remember, though I'm not confident about any of it:

1. I do not think UNC was involved in the JCD mania. Rather, it dates from that unfortunate period 25 years ago or so when the program was helmed by He Who Shall Not Be Named. I have a fleeting memory of a UNC win over Duke when Haywood was fouled by Battier at the very end of the game and nailed the FTs to win. That might have been 2000. Don't remember if it was at home or on the road, but that would be the candidate if UNC was involved.

2. The main on-court antagonist for Duke during those years was Maryland. And if I had to bet the opponent when the JCD was first utilized, it would be the Terps. It's hard to believe now, but two decades ago, the Terp fan base was -- outside of the Heels, of course -- the absolute best at skewering Dookies. Like, it was UNC, then a small gap and Maryland and then a large gap to everyone else. A bit later in that decade, the Twerps created the Scheyerface (and the thread on the Maryland boards photoshopping him was the funniest thing I can remember seeing on the internet ever), and the "This is how you suck" video

()

Plus, in the Blake/Dixon years, Maryland was the only team regularly beating Duke.

3. The other reason to doubt whether UNC was involved was Roy. Does anyone think Roy would have let the players dance on center court on the road after a win? UNC had been beating Duke at Cameron (it was not yet HIS) regularly over the previous decade. It wasn't something that would make the team or the fans lose their shit.

4. It was definitely not a one-time thing. If I recall, the JCD initials came from one of the cheer sheets (another "invention" dating to that time), as the sheets included signups for the coveted and all-important "JCD Squad." I'm pretty sure they were JCDing for a year or two at least. Probably one dumbass group of sophomores came up with it and it vanished with their graduation.

Anyway, other thoughts and memories? Can we reconstruct it through the fog of history? And if anyone knows how to find an archived version of that Scheyerface thread, post it. There's no bad time for the Scheyerface thread.

The Haywood end of game free throws were 2001. That was the game where Forte went for 24 and 16 and Doherty made the ugly cheerleaders comment.

JCD’ing existed before Roy Williams returned to UNC in 2003.
I think that's right. I mentioned Roy as shorthand for "the entire Carolina program." None of Gut's players were dancing on logos on the road. Not even Doh would allow that, I think.

That said, if there was a UNC game that spurred the JCD, it would have been that one in Cameron in 2001.

It's possible that JCD came after that game? I don't think any Heel would intentionally rub it in on the logo, but was there a Carolina player who was excited at the victory, ended up on the logo, and the Dookies lost their minds?

My memory is that no Heel was celebrating on d00k’s center court logo after the 2001 win. There’s a chance that the d00k JCD’ers were protecting their logo until Carolina had left for Chapel Hill.

Well, that seems like a fairly authoritative account. I knew the Terps had to involved in some capacity, though it appears to be a tag team job between UNC fans and Maryland players to annoy Dukies to the point of . . . well, I guess Dukies are just like that.
