Perhaps this is a local dialect thing, but growing up, being accused of “storytelling” was being called out for gross exaggeration or lying (in a way that gave you space to walk it back before shit got real).
It is not a local thing.

We were in a Lyft today and my wife spotted near the end of the ride that the driver was listening on his ear buds to a youtube video that was entitled the Secret Execution of the Traitor Mark Milley. That optional tip quickly dissapeared.
"That optional tip quickly dissapeared."

Why? Was the ride bad because he a right-wing nutter butter?

the tip is optional. the ride doesn't have to be "bad" to decide that you don't want to give one.

if my driver was consuming unhinged political violence porn via podcast during a ride i wouldn't be inclined to tip them, either.

i'd just be glad i survived the drive.

It's still a bribe. Except now no one cares.
Well, according to the Supreme Court, it's not, or not necessarily. One of the more mystifying rulings from last term (or the term before). Giving a public official money as "appreciation" after the bribed act does not count as bribery and is not covered under federal bribery statutes. It was a great day for all mobsters.
