Ah, “they are missing critical voices.” Like the voice of the authoritarian administration that has fought tooth and nail to silence its critics and hide all evidence of wrongdoing.

Yes, CBS is now just another mouthpiece for MAGA.

It's not accurate to call it a mouthpiece for MAGA - that is exactly what Weiss wants, to be able to pick out the most extreme critiques that say things like that and show that it's not true. It would be more accurate to call it complicit in that it can provide a veneer of credibility to the administration by claiming to be "impartial" and watering down or spiking stories like this because they're "too negative" to the administration.

But yeah, Weiss is doing exactly what she was hired to do.

She's just running the playbook her husband and other MAGA officials have perfected in eroding trust in journalism:

1. Refuse to comment on story when journalist appropriately asks for comment
2. Wait to see what reaction is to the story so you can decide how to react
3. In the meantime, criticize media for supposedly biased take and ignore the fact that you refused to provide your side of the story when given the opportunity

I mean, 6 of one, half dozen of the other?

Obviously CBS isn’t FOX. Yet.

But it takes time to (a) kill off well-researched journalistic programming that criticizes and/or exposes the admin, and then (b) overhaul the tenor of an entire network to become a mouthpiece for the admin.

Weiss is well into the first stage. There’s no reason to think she’ll stop there.

Not saying CBS will ever become FOX. Of course Weiss will try to maintain a “veneer” of credibility for the network, such that they won’t lose nearly a billion bucks for promoting obvious lies.

But—to use the 2020 election coverage as a point of comparison—I’d think a CBS under Weiss’ control would have done a lot to sow doubt and confusion and to promote the possibility of election fraud, without crossing the lines that FOX did.

I don't think it's going to work because I don't think CBS News will be able to lure nearly enough conservatives from places like Fox to make up for their regular viewers that they're going to lose. Her ratings for her interview with Erika Kirk were dismal, and I don't see them getting any better as she forces the network to the Trumpian Right. If anything they will probably get worse.

Having said that I don't think their ratings really matter anymore - Paramount Skydance just wants to keep CBS News from getting Trump angry too often so they can stay in his good graces and they can continue to buy up more and more media and entertainment sources with favorable administration approval. CBS News is likely small fry for them compared to their other media holdings, so they'll be OK to let it linger in ratings hell as long as Weiss can keep Dear Leader happy and off their backs.
