Every time the Winter Olympics are on I think back to the 1980 Olympics.
For those of us old enough to remember it, the miracle on ice game was one of those moments that is seared in our brains.
I was in third grade attending a high school basketball playoff tournament. I remember they got on the PA and announced the final score and a cheer erupted in the crowd. I asked my dad if it was a big deal and he said it was huge. We then listened to a replay of the game on the car ride home.
Keep in mind, hockey barely registers in Oklahoma yet everyone knew the improbability and significance of that win.
I get goose bumps to this day watching the replay with Al Michaels call at the end of the game.
I did not fully get the significance until I watched the US vs USSR hockey game in the ‘84 Olympics. I was hoping for a repeat but I quickly learned just how much better the Soviets were.
Anyone else remember what they were doing that day?
