In the alien contact theme, I've watched both of these this week

Enjoyed Close Encounters. The Abyss was a bunch of unbelievable crap.
Close Encounters was one of my favorite movies as a kid(was born Oct 1972). Even had a Close Encounters lunch box. A bucket list of mine is to visit Devil's Tower someday.

My husband and I went to see the morning matinee of Backroooms today — thought we would be the only ones there at 11:20 am on a Sunday for a horror movie, but theater was half full, almost all teens in groups and tweens with parents.

The trailers before this film (other than Disclosure Day) were pretty doggone violent, including to my surprise at least one redband trailer.

Thankfully (depending on your tastes), Backrooms is not very violent or gory other than a few scenes (and the worst violence is off screen). It is very slow burn and tense liminal horror/psychological horror that owes a lot to the creepypasta online scene but also to a couple of excellent liminal horror novels (House of Leaves and more particularly Horrorstor) and a mix of horror film inspirations (The Shining and Blair Witch, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Skinamarink and even Severance and some of Lost, as well as a number of ‘70s/early ‘80s psychological thrillers like The Ninth Configuration).

Much more tense, disturbing and disorienting than terrifying. My husband and I both liked it a lot and were surprised that it had more depth than expected.

It won’t satisfy gorehounds or folks who want action and jump scares. Not that kind of movie.

It does give me hope someone could figure out how to film the classic House of Leaves novel, which inspired some of the earliest YouTube horror shorts (“Five and a half minute hallway”).

Sounds like a movie I would really like.

Definitely disorienting. When it first started I was praying that the entire movie wasn't from that perspective. I would have had to leave. I can't even play first person shooter games for more than 15-20 minutes and I start to feel sick.

The Sheep Detectives is for now my second favorite film of 2026. Yep, it's a "kids film" or "family film," but one of the best of that kind I have seen in years, and I think in time it will likely be regarded as one of the great ones like Babe and Toy Story 3.

The trailer reminded me a bit of Babe.

How does it compare to Fantastic Mr. Fox?

Just finished The Burroughs before all the Canes hard work. Sort of Stranger Things with old people but I have to admit that as an old I enjoyed it!

Odyssey tix was a total clusterfuck on Thursday.

I forgot about it and didn’t get to it until about 2p. Got sent into a queue with wait time at “over an hour.” They weren’t lying. After getting through that queue, seat maps that weren’t updating so you were trying to buy seats that had already been sold, then when you figured out those workarounds it was failed transaction after failed transaction… finally about 4:30p I had 4 tix for a grand total of $135.

This movie better be f’ing good.
