It is very rare for a coyote to attack a full grown man. Him running away, tripping and falling was just about the worst decision he could possibly have made. If he just hazed the coyote with his arms up in the air, he would have been fine and the coyote would not have attacked (even if rabid, it isn't likely going after a full grown man).
