The whole idea of registering Independent or Unafilliated is to not belong to a party. Anti-social bastards!

 
To deal with the issue of two dominant parties you have to address the systemic cause: first past the post voting and single member districts.

Anything short of that is not going to produce the desired results.

And money. Otherwise our third parties are going to be vanity vehicles for the likes of Bloomberg, Musk, Perot, etc.
 
Cut out winner takes all.
All parties get a seat at the table and can caucus across lines.
Your party wins 7% of the vote… they get 7% of the seats in Congress.
And they can coalesce together to cause gridlock when necessary or caucus with the party that wants to ensure democracy and oust the oligarchs. There are ways around it… plenty of examples in other socially democratic and representative style governments.

You’d have to do away with how federal House seats are apportioned and abolish the Senate.
