Look-In: The Tar Heels rise up to meet yet another highly touted squad of defenders today in a 4:05 tip in the Fiserv(?) Forum in Milwaukee. The U of Mississippi are heralded as ‘stoppers, giving up 71.7 ppg while scoring at a 77.2 pace (UNC’s similar stats are 70.5 and 81.9 – so the truth is that Carolina actually gives up less ppg than Miss). The Rebels do cause chaos to the tune of making opponents commit 14.3 turnovers per game while grabbing 8.8 steals. They score 16 points per game off of turnovers as well. In contrast they have been outrebounded 38 to 33 a game this year. Sean Pedulla, once of VaTech, is their top scorer (6-1, 14.9, 3.5 rpg, 3.5 apg) and after him five players average between 10.4 and 10.8 ppg. That’s balance. Malik Dia is their tallest player at 6-9 (#0, 10.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg). Former dookie Jaemyn Brakefield is 6-8 and plays starter minutes as 6th man though and averages 10.8 ppg and 4.4 rpg. Jaylen Murray (#5, 5-11, 10.6 ppg, 3.5 apg) complements Pedulla in the backcourt and like the former Hokie has faced Carolina, playing for St. Peter’s way back in 2022 when the Tar Heels ended their Cinderella run on the way to the NCAA Finals. This is a bothersome squad and Chris Beard is a solid coach.
Frontcourt: Genius vibes for Jalen Washington but he’s low physically while Lubin is loaded. Young James Brown is also numbers up.
Wings: A soaring yet cool and collected Drake Powell is joined by Ian Jackson with big numbers across the board. Jay’Len Withers is walking tall in all categories as well. Cade Tyson is prepped for duty.
Guards: Cadeau is ready, demeanor in check and the physical and mental primed while R.J. Davis is Fire and Brain. Seth Trimble is Mr. X-Factor.
Overall: This Mississippi team is old and experienced with five regulars born in 2000 through 2002. In contrast Carolina has two regulars that fit that bill (Davis and Withers). Five of their top eight have played elsewhere. They’ve been around the block a time or two. They are a weathered bunch – and they have some solid biorhythms today. Bright-siding it – Carolina has outstanding rhythms across the board for today’s game. Ian Jackson finally has something to work with as does Lubin. The Cadeau arcs are a good kind, Powell and Trimble are powerhouses, and R.J. Davis, while physically dipping, has it all in the ‘want-to’ and the ‘can-do’ categories. Mr. Washington is super-thoughtful to boot. And look at Withers.
These schools have not met on the court in 99 years and the record stands at 1-1 with Carolina taking the last contest, 38-23, on their way to the Southern Conference Championship of 1926…The Heels were led by All-American Jack Cobb, the Helms Foundation College Basketball Player of the Year. His is one of the two jerseys in the rafters without a number (Cartwright Carmichael is the other). Time to take the lead in this series – this is unfinished business. Las Vegas says UNC by 1.5. The Biorhythms have Carolina by 10.
